Why do we have to confess to a priest? If we talk to God everyday and tell him our sins and we are sorry, does that not count?
Confession to a priest is the normative way established by Christ for Christians to receive forgiveness of post-baptismal sins. Your profile says you are Catholic. Have you never experienced for yourself the powerful graces of this sacrament? Why do we have to confess to a priest? A sure sign that you NEED to talk to a priest! God love you.Yes I am Catholic. And honestly I feel a lot better talking to God directly than I do a priest.
Claudee, I can understand where you come from as it is sometimes very difficult to tell another man your personal sins. What helps me is to remember that you’re not really confessing to the priest as a person, but you’re confession to God in the presence of the priest. He witnesses your confession to God and on behalf of Christ the priest forgives your sins and reconciles you back to the Church. When God forgives your sins (through the priest) your baptismal grace returns.Yes I am Catholic. And honestly I feel a lot better talking to God directly than I do a priest.
You are free to go to any parish that is in communion with Rome for the sacrment. I wouldn’t recommend “parish shopping” if you think that one priest is more leniant than another, but by no means is there anything wrong with finding a parish with a better confession schedule. Is it ok to go to a different church for confession then? My church does not have a permanent priest right at this time.
Yep - any Catholic priest is fine!any Catholic church is fine. Any Catholic priest.
I routinely go to masses and confessions at different parishes all over Philadelphia and the burbs, it keeps freshness for me.
Go where you can. There is not requirement to confess in your own parish. I use the same priest every time for confession (about once a month); he is the pastor of a church in the next town down the road. Go where you are comfortable – and remember it is canonically REQUIRED that you be allowed to confess anonymously – you know, behind a screen, even if not in a “box”.Is it ok to go to a different church for confession then?
