I have to write a report and have gotten most of the information I need. However, I need to know one simple thing; What does the priest say when you go to confession when you first sit down? Thank you!

Varies from priest to priest but in my experience it’s usually just a short prayer like ‘May God be in you mind and heart and help you to make a good confession’ or something similar.

Not a lot, 🙂 you say, “Bless me Father for I have sinned” he’ll prompt you to say how long has it been since your last confession.

You tell you sins, and be asked to make an act of contrition, then you’'ll most likely be given penance, then you’ll be absolved.

And if you are sorry, there is no feeling in this world like Absolution.

According to the Rite of Penance, Chapter I, Rite of Reconciliation of Individual Penitents:

“41. When the penitent comes to confess his sins, the priest welcomes him warmly and greets him with kindness.
42. The the penitent makes the sign of the cross which the priest may make also.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The priest invites the penitent to have trust in God, in these or similar words:
**May God, who has enlightened every heart, help you to know your sins and trust in his mercy. **
The penitent answers: Amen.
Other forms of reception of the penitent may be chosen from nos. 67-71.”

These other forms are:
“67. Ezekiel 33:11
The Lord does not wish the sinner to die but to turn back to him and live. Come before him with trust in his mercy.
68. Luke 5:32
May the Lord Jesus welcome you. He came to call sinners, not the just. Have confidence in him.
69.
May the grace of the Holy Spirit fill your heart with light, that you may confess your sins with loving trust and come to know that God is merciful.
70.
May the Lord be in your heart and help you to confess your sins with true sorrow.
71. 1 John 2:1-2
If you have sinned, do not lose heart. We have Jesus Christ to plead for us with the Father: he is the Holy One, the atonement for our sins and for the sins of the whole world.

Sorry this is off subject but I’m curious about the photo you show. It looks very much like the fake photo of the unapproved apparition of Mary in Medjugorie.

Your the forth person to ask me that this week. yes I was apprehensive about it because of that place.

But I was always drawn to the picture, then to my surprise stumbled on this.

Anyway I can’t tell if the story is true or not, but I’ll just treat it like any-other picture of Mary, I think the lady in it is very beautiful, if it is really her.

Do a comparison with the one you talked about, makes me wonder where they got the picture from.

Thanks for asking, don’t want to say more, breaking forum protocol.

Let me know if you think I should with-draw it, and if you find any info on whether it is false.

I’ll PM you.

This is my experience:

I sit down and say hello, and the priest says hello back. Then he says, “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” and makes the sign of the cross, and I make the sign of the cross also. Then I start talking!
