****Hi friends,I’m just recently come home to the church, plan on going to confession this afternoon,I’m really anxious about it,its been many yrs.since, I have a question,when I confess I can’t do it as I did when I was going regularly and say I lied three times ect.how do I make a good confession after so many yrs.? Some idea’s please

I don’t know the answers to your questions, I just want to tell you that I will say a prayer for you.

Just be general. Say things like:

“I lied many times”
“I profaned the name of God many times”

You’re not expected to remember specific numbers if it’s your first confession in years. In fact, I go to confession at least once a month and I never say how many times I sin specifically. I just say “once”, “several times”, or “many times”.

Also, try not to make it a “laundry list”. Try talking about the root of the sins. What caused you to fall into them?

Finally, remember to memorize an act of contrition. This one’s pretty good and easy to memorize:

“O My God, I am most heartily sorry for all my sins; and I detest them above all things, because they displease Thee, Who art infinitely good and lovable, and I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to do penance for them, and never more to offend Thee.”
 
thanks so much,it really helped me.I say the act of contrition every night,that part is easy.Somewhere,I just decided I didnt have to tell anyone my sins but GOD,but through this site"thank GOD" I now know why it is so important and I understand why.I will try very hard to make a good confession,:crossrc:

Tell the priest that it’s been ___ years since you went to Confession. He will be glad to walk you through the whole thing, and be thrilled to do it. Welcome home!

Don’t worry about memorizing this right away, many people in your situation get “stage fright” and get flustered trying to recall memorized prayers. You can write it down and bring it in to Confession with you if you think that will help. Or just tell the priest that you need help with that too and he can prompt you. You can also write down any sins you want to be sure you don’t want to forget to mention. Just remember to destroy whatever you wrote down afterward!

Memorization of formal prayers will come naturally, especially if you make those prayers part of your daily prayer life. Welcome home!
 
Plus, if you’re drawing a blank of stuff you need to confess but can’t remember, then say to Jesus in the confessional that you’re sorry for the things you committed but can’t remember. Then, when you do remember a grave sin, confess it next time.

I just came back to the Church after being away some 38 years, so you can imagine what my first confession was like. There is no way you can enumerate your sins as you do when you go to confession on a regular basis, unless you’re sure you know exactly how many times you did something. So just confess it as best you can, and when the priest hears how long it’s been since your last confession, he will totally understand, as, most importantly, God will.

One thing, be sure to go to a priest who you know is very devout and committed to the Church. I was very careful about the first priest I went to, and therefore I had a very good confession, one in which there was no doubt in my mind that the Holy Spirit was in the confessional with me. The second time Iwent to confession I wasn’t as choosy about the priest, and he basically pooh poohed everything I told him as not being that bad, and when I said I felt I needed to heat up my prayer life with things such as the Rosary, he told me that the Rosary is just repeating the same thing over and over, and just concentrate on talking to God.

Pray about it before you actually go. One thing I can tell, after my first confession last month, was the way I felt afterwards. It was like all the anger and all the negative feelings I had been carrying inside of me for many years was just gone. We don’t realize what a horrible burden sin is in our lives. Truly, truly amazing.

The Holy Spirit will help you. Be general but if the priest has questions he will ask, he will help you! I know a little of where you are coming from! THE PRIEST WILL BE THRILLED, JESUS WILL BE THRILLED, ALL OF HEAVEN WILL REJOICE AND WELCOME YOU BACK!!

Well I did a good confession,Of course I happened to get the pastor of my church,when i walked in I saw a line,and i thought I don’t remember seeing a confessional,because I had been going to church when i felt like it,anyway I was so happy to see one, really two, one was face to face the other screened, Oh was I hoping I would get the screened one ,so I prayed about it and yup I got the screened one.Father was very nice and helpful I asked for his help as someone here suggested,he was wonderful,so,thanks for all the idea’s I feel sooo good,when he told me to make my act of contrition I started put my head down and behold there was an act of contrition that was not at all what I had learned I felt so ignorant,so I asked him if I could say the one I knew of course he said yes.quite an experience…Yours in ChRIST
