Just curious about other people’s preferences and why 🙂

When you go to Confession, do you prefer the confessional or a confession room, and why?

I am aware of a similar question on the Forums, but it is not quite the same. This one is not about anonymity.

That’s exactly what it’s about for a lot of people, though. If you don’t ask from the point of view of anonymity, then what **is **it about?

It. Doesn’t. Matter. To me, anyway.

Let me explain 🙂

You can have a screen in a confessional room as well, making it anonymous. So it people had the choice between the two, which would they choose?

Thanks for the clarification 🙂 In that case…

…It. Still. Doesn’t. Matter. 😃

I usually prefer the confessional, but if theres none available and I really need to go to Confession, it doesn’t matter to me. 😉

I prefer my parish’s confession room (which has a screen). The confessional is cramped and has spiders. Given the choice, why wouldn’t I choose the open, spider-free room?

I said doesn’t matter, why should it matter where you confess your sins. As long as you don’t have a place where everyone can here you it doesn’t matter.

many confessional rooms have screens.

When I was growing up in the 1970s, we had a priest who would literally hear confessions anytime, anywhere. If you ran into him at the grocery store and tell him “Father, I need to confess,” he’d pull out his stole out of his pocket, find a corner where there would be some semblance of privacy and hear your confession. Short lines would form in the middle of HEB.

So honestly, I don’t care. I prefer the confessional, but I can confess anywhere. In a box or next to the lox but not with a fox (ok…I live in South Texas, we don’t have lox, but I wanted to make Dr. Seuss rhyme.)

I usually confess face to face and a large room lets me kneel when I say the act of contrition and receive absolution.

How about kneeling at the altar, facing the priest during a reconciliation rite before Easter?
Been there…done that! 👍

Mike 😉

I know, that’s the point!

If the anonymity is present in both cases, the question I asked was: What’s your preference? Preference. Not that it matters where one confesses, but simply what people like more, if they do.

How would that be done with the opportunity to confess your sins individually? Occasionally, priests will give a general absolution, but they are invalid if you participate in them intentionally unless there is a serious need for it.

In answer to your question the priest sits with his side to you as you kneel and make a valid confession. The only things lacking are a confessional box and a screen. After confessing he will talk to you face to face, give you absolution and tell you your pennance. 👍

If I have a choice of anonymity or not, I have no preference as to room or confessional.

Not always. In my Church there is no screen in the confessional room. And I know of other churches that don’t have screens in these rooms.

I know churches that have screens but the holes in the screens are so big that the priest can see you. 😃

I like the confessionals for the same reasons I prefer Churches built before 1920s… because they are just simply cool. 😃

But if I need to confess in a room, I will.

NOTE: I actually was put off my the room for many years due to my first confession as a child because of the face to face confession. But today, I don’t really care. But confessionals are the coolest! 😃

Another reason why I would guide my family to use a confessional is that it is not unheard of that unscrupulous priests will use the confessional to find people they can approach sexually. Before Vatican II There was a written canon that a bishop must receive three complaints from parishioners of sexual propositioning in the confessional before he could remove the priest. [edited]
