Is anyone here from around Milwaukee and know which churches have actual confessionals? I’ve only found ones that do ‘reconciliation rooms’ without screens or anything and I am not into that.

“Reconciliation rooms” usually have a screen that one is free to use. Have you checked?

I agree with the previous poster. I have never been in a reconciliation room that didn’t also have a kneeler with a screen to use for anonymity. Anonymous confession is a right of the Catholic faithful; it would be unusual to find a parish without some sort of anonymous option available. Peek into the reconciliation room next time you’re at your church and see what you can find out.

Otherwise, in my experience, many older churches (built before 1920) tend to have actual confessionals build in where the priest sits in the middle section and the laity can kneel on either side. I would start by looking at your local Basilica or Cathedral and then moving on to older parishes.

Try St. Stanislaus Oratory. It’s a traditional parish that celebrates the EF, so I imagine that they will have actual confessionals.

Yes, as I said, I’ve only found ones with reconciliation rooms without screens.

Thank you @ wild thing and giuseppe96

Nelka: Some parishes in recent decades have created a confessional room where you can sit face to face with the priest or as other poster has mentioned can still opt to still use the private confessional grid there in the room between penitent and priest allowing for anonymity.

You could also try the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians at Holy Hill.

Holy Hill is located outside of Milwaukee, in Hubertus, WI.

The Confession schedule is listed on the home page.

Here is a link with information about Holy Hill, in case you’re interested:

To me, the fastest way to find out, would be to go to the diocese website, pick churches in the area where you want to go, and call them and ask.

Hi alliys,

I hope my post didn’t come across as condescending. I didn’t mean it to be; I just wanted to highlight that a reconciliation room that appears at first glance to be face-to-face might also have a screen available, in case that had not occurred to you.

In any event, canon law (Can 964) establishes norms for confession and says the conference of bishops is to ensure that “there are always confessionals with a fixed grate between the penitent and the confessor in an open place so that the faithful who wish to can use them freely.” Since it sounds like you have found several places that do not offer a fixed grate, you might consider raising the issue with your pastor or the local bishop. It is the right of the Catholic faithful to have the opportunity for anonymous confession.

I’ve been to many churches in the Archdiocese and I haven’t seen one without a screen.

Milwaukee is a really old city that has had a significant Catholic population for 150 years or so anyhow.

I’d look at parishes with older church buildings as the ones most likely
