Confessions on Saturday only?

Yes you are encouraged to visit Jesus and adore him, in the Blessed Sacrament. Unfortunately though the days are gone when even hardened criminals had respect for a church, and many churches have to be locked up to prevent theft and vandalism, if there’s nobody able to keep an eye on them all day.

I can understand that one … how sad, but it’d be silly not to play it safe. .

The priests in our area that do this have confession at each parish prior to the Mass. This enables everyone to have a time to go if desired.

That is the way it was in my parish, long before Vatican 2, while Pius 12th was still Pope. We had a longer time for them, but Saturday afternoon it was.

Interesting, so this isn’t a new thing at all, necessarily! Thank you, that is good to know!

As most of my friends aren’t Catholic ( and those who are, don’t practice )

That’s me, too. Fortunately I do have a friend that is Catholic and was tickled pink a week ago when I asked if he’d consider being my sponsor!

I find it awkward to explain to them that I can’t go for an all day hike, or I can’t be out shopping or whatever it is that we do on saturday’s around 4:00 because I have to duck out and head to church for confession.

Aww, poor you … that has to be difficult. I’m going to be fortunate, in a way - I’m never really available in the evening anyway, because I always have to make it home for 6pm to give my cats their insulin.

I just find it so personal that one goes to confession that I don’t really want to explain too much to them. My non Catholic spouse asks me if he can ask about confession and how it went and I say " no it is personal and private".

I understand! :hug1: It must be one of those times when you don’t want to ruin a lovely, special thing by having to explain it to death, right? (and, as you say - MUCH too personal!)

We in Colorado Springs have a Catholic center at one of our shopping malls where confession is available daily 10:00am - 9:00 pm. AWESOME! It is staffed by the Capuchin Fransiscan priests here. Maybe you can contact them to find out how they got started and how something like this can be done where you live. Website is:

!!! That is absolutely brilliant! Imagine that, you could nip off to Mass during lunchtime, or on your way home from work - and Confession almost any time you might need it!

We don’t have anything like that where I live. It would be awesome if we did. But we do have a shrine church in downtown Cleveland that is staffed by Capuchin Franciscan priests. They hear confession from 11:30 until the last one is done and have daily Mass at 12 p.m. Even though the Mass starts at 12, one of the priests will keep hearing confessions. Then if you have time after confession you can stay for daily Mass. They also have this schedule on Saturday which works out great for people who want to do the First Saturday devotion (you can do confession, receive Communion at Mass, then say the Rosary after Mass on Saturday). The Poor Clare nuns lead the Rosary from behind the screen in the church.

Our church has them only on Saturdays as well, from like 4-4:30. Except for the Thursday before first Friday. For as large as our church is, you’d think there would be more at more convenient times. I can never remember to go on a Sat. afternoon.

Most of our parishes where I live have them on Saturday only as well but they all will always say if you need confession please contact the office and make an appointment. Now the big cathedral down town as them every day before the noon Mass. This is where I like to go and it gives me a nice excuse to drive down there and attend the noon Mass. It is so beautiful.

I know it’s a little late, Silent Deb, but I just read your post today. You’re in Vancouver…

In Surrey, at Our Lady of Good Counsel, we have confessions every day before mass and the priests are also available by phone appointment if you want a face to face. So our confession times are:
half hour before mass everyday: 7:30am and 9:00am
Saturdays: 3-4pm and 5 and 7pm
Sundays: 8am, 9:30, 11:45 2:00 5:00 and 7:00

We are blessed! There’s no reason to miss or avoid confession here!

No you’re not weird at all, IMO you’ve got exactly the right attitude. Also it’s a good idea if possible to find a priest whom you find suitable as your “spiritual director”, to whom you can confess regularly (not necessarily identifying yourself by name, you might use just your Christian name or a pseudonym or remind the priest “I’m the one who’s been discussing with you my struggles with overcoming the sin of (whatever it is)”.

Spiritual direction is different from confession, and while for some people their confessor and SD are the same, for many they choose different people. I do not believe that Spiritual direction should by anonymous. There is a particular intimate relationship between a directee and a dirctor and I belive that the director needs to know who the person is they are directing. Sometimes people receive direction by mail or phone or even e-mail, but for the most part they know who each other are.

nodding I would think it’d be far better to know the person as well, and do it face-to-face … heavens, otherwise I could just stay home with my books!
