Confessor priest takes precedent, right?

I just want to make sure my understanding is correct:
If your confessor priest says “X isn’t a mortal sin as long as Y,” but you correspond with another legitimate priest via email and he tells you something kind of different, we are to give our confessor who knows us the precedent and obey him, right?

I have scruples and I am trying to cultivate obedience to my confessor priest, so I am asking about this.

If you have scruples, you should be confessing and getting guidance from one priest, and one priest only.
So yes, listen to your Confessor.

If you have scruples and are trying to cultivate obedience to your confessor, you need to stop seeking other opinions. That includes other priests and Internet strangers. Be obedient by listening to your confessor and that is all.

You already have another thread on this same topic from February where you received plenty of answers, including from a priest.

The question in that thread (and that priest’s advice) were kinda different from what I’m getting at here, I think?

“Something kinda different”

Look, we can’t know how different that advice was without more details. Don’t worry about whether the sin is mortal or not. It’s sin. Worry about that.

Don’t quietly allow for sin to be tolerable to you, because you’re distracting yourself with the academic question of whether it is mortal. This is a psychological crutch.

Read Quadrupani’s Peace and Light. It’s online in both audio and text, and being published so you can buy the book. If you can’t find it, ask and I will give you links.

He says the priest is responsible before God for what he tells you. If the priest tells you something, he has judged that he has enough info to judge. If he thought he didn’t have enough info, he would ask you for more.

Your confessor knows you in real life. He can very easily ask you questions. Therefore, you should listen to him and him alone, because he is in the best position to advise you.

If I had a problem with my car, would I listen to the mechanic who had test-driven it, or the mechanic I had called and asked about it?

It all depends on whether when he states that “X isn’t a mortal sin as long as Y” is actually true or not. I know that may come across as a bit crass, but you’d be surprised at what some priests are preaching these days. I work with someone who’s priest openly believes in gay marriage, thinks homosexual acts are not sinful, believes that women should be priests and so on. Would you be confident of his spiritual guidance in confession? I would stay away from his confessional, and for that matter his parish like the plague…but that’s just me.
