My son, 16, was confirmed yesterday at the Cathedral. Eight parishes filled the church with proud families, candidates and sponsors. I did my best to be discreet and reverent while capturing the moments on video.
My son, took on the patron saint Christopher. After receiving the anointing with holy chrism, I snaked my way back to the pew where I found my wife in tears. She told me when Joseph was up there with the bishop she felt a sense of being drained, emptied and filled with both joy and sorrow. It was a dual sense of loss and sweetness.
All she could muster up was a brief prayer of acceptance, “Lord, if it is your will and he has a vocation, your will be done.” After the ceremonies, she asked him if he felt anything and he replied that it “felt like time stood still” while he was being confirmed.
I have to say my son is more a typical teenager when it comes to Mass attendance and confession. He serves at the altar but seems more focused on social media, video games and now, cars. Other adults in our town always make positive comments about his demeanor. Thank goodness, we parents seem to have been spared the rebellious phase.
My wife and I were confirmed when we were baptized so we don’t have a point of reference when it comes to this experience.
