Hello all,
I am asking this for a friend of mine.
They were baptized, attended faith formation classes (or CCD), had their first communion, and continue through CCD, but stopped attending classes before being confirmed. There was some personal issues with the class and they could not continue through. Would my friend have to complete all of RCIA or is there something else out there to have them receive their confirmation? They attend mass and seek understanding in their faith, thus this question.
Thank you and May God Bless you.

Your friend needs to speak with someone in his or her parish. There is no universal guideline on a matter like this. It’s up to the individual pastor and however he chooses to run his parish.

Yes. Agreed-- they need to speak to the pastor as to how things are handled locally.

In general, RCIA is not for baptized, catechized Catholics who only lack the sacrament of confirmation. Certainly not the rites themselves are not.

But often times people in that situation will be placed in the catechesis meetings of RCIA. In other parishes/dioceses they run adult confirmation classes which are simply proximate preparation for reception of the sacrament.

Since the person is a baptized Catholic, the bishop is the minister of confirmation unless he delegates to the pastor.

In our diocese, adult candidates go to the scheduled confirmation masses to be confirmed by the bishop-- so they are mixed in with the high schoolers and can be confirmed any time during the year at any of the scheduled confirmation masses.

In my former diocese, the bishop had an annual adult confirmation mass and all adults from throughout the diocese were confirmed at that mass. They usually spent about 6 weeks prior in formation classes.

In other places, I have seen the pastor be granted delegation to confirm the Catholic party.

My parish offers adult Confirmation classes for those in just this kind of situation. They meet separately from the youth group but are confirmed by the bishop at the same time. Have your friend contact a priest at the parish and work out the details; this is very common.
