Confirmation for children baptized in the Maronite Church

Good evening,

Quick question for anybody. My wife and I are divorced and not yet annulled. Both of our children were baptized in the Maronite Church, but attend CCD in the Roman Church. They have received 1st Communion in the Roman (Latin) church, but my ex (Maronite) says they are already Confirmed by way of baptism. I am baptized Latin rite and we attend a Latin church. She wants to pull them out of CCD before Confirmation. Any help would be great!

Help with what? Your wife is correct.

There really is no reason for them not to stay in classes though. They still need to learn.
 
Eastern Catholic children are indeed typically Chrismated(confirmed) shortly following Baptism. I know the Maronite Church is heavily latinized but I believe they still follow that. I would call the parish they were baptized at and double;e check though.

No harm in staying in CCD just to learn though…my kids are in Catholic school and we are Eastern…they’ve already been chrismated and communed so they just sit those events out but they still learn about it

Canon 29

By virtue of baptism, a child who has not yet completed his fourteenth year of age is enrolled in the Church sui iuris of the Catholic father; or the Church sui iuris of the mother if only the mother is Catholic or if both parents by agreement freely request it, with due regard for particular law established by the Apostolic See.
 
I don’t know enough about Eastern Church Canon law to comment?

I guess if I understood what your problem is, it might help.

It just means that they are technically Latin Catholic since you (their father) are. Unless you both agreed for them to be Maronite (but it doesn’t sound like you did). Where they were baptized at is irrelevant. I would still call the parish to verify what exactly happened during their baptism.

I know quite a few Marionites and they do Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation all at once with an infant. Quite often my friend went to Roman parishes and his children were refused communion as young ones beause Roman priests did not know. Why did only the Baptism happen?
 
Basically do they need to received Confirmation in Latin church like they received 1st Communion.

I’m just a bit confused/concerned why a Maronite priest Baptized them without following the precepts of the Marionite traditions.

I understand they are being raised in the Latin Church. For lack of community my friend raised 5 of his 9 children in Latin parishes.
 
It sounds like you need to call and get the facts from the Maronite parish and then discuss it with your local priest. He’s the one who can advise you on this.

Confirmation is a sacrament that can be received only once. If they are already confirmed (which is likely) then they will not be confirmed again. You can check with the parish where they were baptized to see if this is the case.

On the other hand, it’s vital that they learn about their faith, so the fact that they are confirmed doesn’t mean that they no longer need instruction.

As am I. He should have referred them to the father’s Latin Rite pastor.

No two ways about it.
 
The missus sounds like she is correct on this.

If its standard operating procedure to confirm infants in the Maronite Church, she would know.

Theoretically, your current parish office would check for baptismal certificates, which would have the sacrament noted on it by the Maronites before the children went on the confirmation list.

If you are in a city with a Maronite parish, I’m sure the parish priest knows all about it.
 
As has been said here before, the best thing to do in this scenario is to get in contact with the parish that your children were baptized in. They could look at the official record, and would know if they were baptized, chrismated (confirmed), and communed (given First Communion); just baptized; or some other combination.
