My most beloved brother is being confirmed next week. He is 17 years old. I’m excited. What are some masculine Christian gifts? He doesn’t like necklaces so I didn’t buy a cross.

Here is another idea.
Metal bead and paracord rosaries. Trade name Ruged Rosaries.
Company website

Some in our men’s group and the KoC have bought these for high school age and young men. They are pretty substantial (heavy), but were well liked.

My favorite confirmation gift was my rosary. I still use it when out of my habit. While hematite or metal rosaries can be nice in their teen years, I’ve seen many young men switch rosaries as they grew up. I liked them in my teens, but sometimes they can be impractical. They tend to make more noise when you pray them as the weight can cause them to clack together. Also, because of said weight, they have a higher tendancy to fall out of your hand while meditating if you hold them lightly or out of your pocket as they shift around.

I would suggest a nice masculine wooden rosary. Cocoa wood tends to be very good for rosaries. It is a hardwood, but also is rather light. It can take a beating, hold its carvings, retains its polish so it feels smooth in you hand, and doesn’t get that sticky patina which some hardwoods do if they aren’t frequently used. Ebony and mahogany are also good, but ebony is usually more expensive and mahogany has a tendancy to get that sticky patina in humid environments if it isn’t regularly cleaned.

I will offer my Divine Office next week for your brother. Offer him my congatulations!

God Bless,
Br. Ben, CRM

I’ll second this endorsement. I have one of their single decade rosaries, and I love it! It feels durable and portable!

I’d recommend the WWI Battle Bead Rosary. It is my all time favorite rosary. It can be bought from rugged rosaries

A good Rosary or Consecration Bracelet

I have this one, but the plating is coming off (but it was only $3.99).
Bought it to see if I would wear one… which I do, I really like it (was never a jewlery guy before)
- Consecration Chain Bracelet

anyway, if you Google “consecration bracelet men” you will find a ton.

The “DOCAT - What to do?” Catholic social teaching book for youth. Written for older teens and young adults. I highly recommend this book.

How about an icon with St Joseph and baby Jesus or his favourite saint?

Buy him a nice crucifix to hang on the wall or something. Thats what my parish got me and the other RCIA members when we got baptised and confirmed.

I’m sure you might, but men don’t generally wear bracelets. If I have something on my wrist, it means I’m in the hospital.

Well… that depends on nationality and region

Younger men will not always object to a chain bracelet without things that dangle from it

I’ve seen some nice keychains with a medal. I have a St. Benedict one myself.

There are some great Confirmation bibles available - would that be something that would strike his fancy?

Keychains are a good idea - we have some good St. Benedict Cross ones.

Maybe a crucifix that he can take to university with him in a couple of years?

The entire YOUCAT series is fantastic. I’ve been recommending the Bible and Prayer Book to a number of families as well.
