I was wondering if I can choose Saint Esther as a confirmation name. She is celebrated by the Catholic church and a saint, but I just wanted to double check. I am a female.

I’m pretty sure my aunt chose Esther when she was confirmed.

Thanks! My actual date of birth is St Cecilia Day. The “cake” is CAF’s way of congratulating the anniversary of forum membership. I didn’t realize it was St. Margaret Mary Alacoque day when I signed on. She’s one of my organization’s patron saints.

Selecting a confirmation name is a custom followed in some places and not in others. Since it’s not universal, there are no universal rules that apply. You would need to ask the people in charge of the confirmation program at your parish if the name is acceptable.

Yes, you can.

A lovely honor to a royal saint who saved the Chosen People.

Esther is a lovely name, and she’ll be a great patron saint to help you out.

Esther is her Persian name, and means “star.” Hence, like Christ is among Christians, among Jews she is associated with the positive Bible mentions of the “morning star,” and with the anguished prayers of Ps. 22, which was written “to the tune of the Doe of the Morning” or “for the morning star,” depending on how you translate it.

Her Hebrew name was Hadassah, meaning “myrtle.”

And of course, Queen Esther is regarded as a “type” of the Virgin Mary, much like the other brave Bible ladies who saved their people.
