Confirmation Name Struggle

Good evening all,

I was just at my RCIA class tonight, and my Baptism and Confirmation are coming up at the Easter Vigil. I was asked to choose a Confirmation name, and to select a saint.

I can’t even fathom doing this.

I am not saintly in any way. I have committed mortal sins, and have done truly terrible things to people. I have helped ruin lives. I am working and praying very hard to become a good person, and give my life to God. I know I cannot live alone anymore, I need Him in my life to guide me.

What is a name that I can use? Is there any saints out there that have led horrid lives that turned themselves around to find His grace?

It can be a daunting task. May I suggest that you go to www.newadvent.org and search under the “s”'s for Saints. I was confirmed when I was 34 y.o. At the time I was teaching the Confirmation class. The priest popped it on me that I would be confirmed with my class. I kind of had an affinity for the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. So I selected him.
 
Ok so I missed one of your questions. My first thought is St. Mary Magdalen. I’ll give this some more thought but I’m sure others will supply names too
 
Here is another good place to look for biographies of Saints:

catholic.org/saints/stindex.php

I suggested in RCIA that they read some biographies. At least one of them will speak to you. You will connect with their story, their personalty, their struggle, their interests, etc. Mary Magdalene seems like a good choice from what you have said, but, read some biographies to make your choice. Even if you read about one you don’t choose, she may become a role model or friend to you. You should be able to give a reason why you chose the Saint you chose.

And why not? You are a changed person in Christ! He has forgotten all those wrong things you and I and everyone else has done once you asked for His forgiveness. 🙂

I think you’re getting the picture that many saints lead horrid lives for a while…but found the love of Christ and did what you are now undertaking! God loves you and is so happy about your decision.

Thank you all for your replies, and for welcoming me so warmly! I was not expecting that at all.

I took a look at the recommended names, and of all of them, St. Mary of Egypt really struck a chord. I think that Mary would be a good choice for me.

Don’t worry. Choosing a Confirmation name is completely optional and secondary to the Sacrament.
 
Hi Nidania!,

I am currently in RCIA too and am very excited:) I recently chose my confirmation Saint (or perhaps she chose me, as I often hear happens? 🙂 ) My confirmation Saint will be Saint Therese of Lisieux. That I know of she did not commit egregious sins, but remember we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of the Lord, so each saint that you will consider will have sinned greatly and mourned their sin. I like Saint Therese because her “Little Way” seems to me a great way to find little joys in my life when everything seems hard.

In whole, I would suggest looking through catholic-forum.com/saints/patron00.htm to find a Saint who struggled with what you struggle through much in life, or a Saint who lived in a way you admire and want to live to serve the Lord better.

Saint Augustine is well known for sinning before his conversion.

I’m an idiot and didn’t realize that I could/should pick a new name, so I went with my actual name “Genevieve.” Great name, great saint but it was already my name. I wish I could go back and pick another. lol

I have spent much of this week researching Saints, to ensure I select the right one, and I have come to a final decision.

St. Margaret of Cortona. I am drawn to her, and feel a real affinity towards her. I will be accepting Margeret during Confirmation, and will also make it a legal middle name 🙂

Aww, yay! She was one of the ones I suggested.🙂 I loved reading her story, which I had never come across until I looked up that link for you.

You’ve got to ‘resonate’ with some saint…everybody does, in one way or another. If your name is not Mary, why not choose the name of the Blessed Mother? Or a form of it, like Maria?
