Is it possible for a confimant to take the name of a Beati (Blessed)? My son has grown very attached to Joseph De Veuster (aka Father Damian) and would like to follow his example of selfless service.

Also is it acceptable for a male to take Mother Mary as their patron?

Thank you,

Yes and yes.

My Confirmation name is a blessed, and it’s a woman 😃 I’m glad about my choice, because I am quite devoted to her.

She is Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, and I would not choose any other saint.

As long as the name is a Christian one, it is acceptable. Some people even take their confirmation names such as Presentacion or Natividad…

A friend’s dear mother, now in her 90s, wanted to take the name “Gloria” for her confirmation name, as in " . . . in excelsis Deo." Her parish priest severely castigated her on the grounds that it was a name associated with immorality – Gloria Swanson was then in her silent-film heyday.
