I am a convert for over 23 years and I did not receive to the best of my memory a confirmation name. I want one. What do I do now?

I believe you could contact the Parish you were received into and ask them to put the name of your choice in their records. But I am unsure but contact the parish.

I did contact my priest when I ask what the church records reflected. He is the one that told me no name was down nor the priest’s name that received me into the church. I emailed him and asked him what now?? He didn’t reply. I think he is just terribly busy. He is a nice man. I just want a confirmation name and I do not know if it is possible now.

I don’t think you can change your Confirmation certificate/records, hence what name you received at your confirmation, after the fact - any more than you can change your Baptismal records.

Presumably you were confirmed under your own Christian name, as I was (not having chosen a separate confirmation name). But do let me know if it’s possible to change the records.

your confirmation name is the name of a saint you choose as a special patron. Nowdays the preference is to stick with your baptismal name as your saint, but someone entereing the Church as an adult can add the name of another saint, particularly if their given name is a pagan overtone. There is no requirement to choose a new name at confirmation, and the name is not recorded in the sacramental register nor does it change your legal name. If you would like to adopt another saint as a patron now, just research this saint and start praying with him/her.

It is whatever the Bishop called you when he annointed you and said “Be sealed by the Holy Spirit.” Sometimes you get a certificate after confirmation by the parish with your confirmation name so I would speak to parents or whomever to see if they have a record of the name you chose.

The Bishop did not receive into the church. A priest did. That was before RCIA - I went to a few classes rwith the priest and one morning (not during Easter) after 7:30 mass, I went to the back of the church and read the creed and he annointed me with oil. I really really like that priest but I was only 20 and didn’t have a clue what was going on and now I want a confirmation name. MAJOR conversion a couple years ago and still going strong!! But if it isn’t meant to be, then it isn’t meant to be. Thank you all for your replies.

I remember in high school that the priest had us fill out some forms. He said that everyone should put their first, middle and last names on the forms. Some students said that they did not have a middle name. He asked if they were confirmed. They replied that they were. He said what is the problem then? Put down your confirmation names. Some students said they did not have a confirmation name. He had to explain to them that their confirmation name was the saint that they had picked.

He then proceeded to read the middle names to the class. Some of the names were real funny.

The only preference for a young person’s not having a separate confirmation name comes from progressive circles. Many of us are still in parishes where this practice is not only permitted, but encouraged. If a young person desires a separate confirmation name, he may have it and use it, regardless of what some DRE with an agenda says.

You may have to speak to the priest to see how he recorded or if he recorded a confirmation name.

Has anyone ever legally added their confirmation name to their existing name? I’m thinking about doing that and I’d be interested in seeing if anyone else does it.

Thought about it, but now that I am about to add a married name, I wonder if three middle initials will be too cumbersome. (middle, confirmation, maiden) 🙂

Yes.

Just spoke with my priest - he said the priest must have thought I was taking my baptismal name as confirmation name and that I could “informally” take a name. So…I told him I unofficially bless myself with the confirmation name of “ELIZABETH”…woo hoo

I remember, Shelby, when you advised me against this same practice. 😉
