I just re-read my message and thought that maybe I should clarify a few things in advance!

No, I don’t personally think that the church is “all about the money,” and it is helpful to see that the practise of making an offering for Confirmation does seem to be more or less established and common.

I live in a society where people are skeptical of a lot of things, and I frequently have to defend my belief in the Church as an institution that should play a leading role in society, even though its members, being human beings, are all imperfect.

The offering you gave will go to the bishop, not go to the priest. It will go to the bishop and some of it will go towards expenses and the rest should go to works of charity.

So, if you do want to give something to the priest, you need to do so directly. He’s spent time with you on weeknights, and will be at the Mass with you. Perhaps you can give him a small offering, or you could give him an offering of Mass intentions in thanksgiving for your confirmation to be celebrated later. That would be about $10 US as an offering for the Mass. You simply write out the the mass intention on a slip of paper and put the money in the envelope and give it to the priest. He will then say the Mass for your intention.
