Growing up I was Baptized and received First Eucharist in the Catholic Church, but was Confirmed in the Presbyterian Church.

I am now engaged to a Catholic and we would like to be married within the Catholic Church. Before speaking to our priest, I was curious to post on this forum and see if it permissible to be married in the church under the current circumstances or if I should first seek to be Confirmed within the Catholic Church.

Thank you in advance for any feedback you may have.

You should first seek to validly receive the Sacrament of Confirmation before Marriage.

Do you consider yourself to be a member of the Presbyterian church? If so confirmation in the Catholic Church would not be appropriate. Certain permissions may be necessary before your wedding could be witnessed in the Catholic Church. That can be discussed with the priest.

If you, on the other hand, wish to practice the Catholic faith, the matter of Confirmation and the resolution of what would seem to have been a temporary cessation of practicing the Catholic faith should be discussed with the priest.

I agree. Confirmation in the Presbyterian church is not the Catholic sacrament. However, you shouldn’t get confirmed unless or until you are a practicing Catholic. In either case you can be married in the Catholic church. Just be upfront with the priest.

Confirmation is not required in order to recieve the Sacrament of Marriage, however it is certainly recommened. It is also recommended that if you choose not to be Confirmed before you are married, that perhaps after marriage you can seek adult catechesis so you can be Confirmed.

Keep in mind my answer presupposes that you have ceased the practice of the Presbyterian Faith and seek full communion with the Holy Roman Catholic Church. If my presupposition is incorrect, then my answer would be irrelavent. You as a Presbyterian would not be bound by Catholic “Forms” and “Customs” but your future wife would be.

While we do not know the present circumstances of the poster nor the circumstances that apparently suggest some self identification as a Presbyterian at some time, unless the poster had defected from the Catholic Church by a formal act, the poster is still bound to the Catholic canonical form of marriage unless dispensed regardless of the religious status of the intended spouse.

Do you desire full communion with the Catholic Church? If so, you should seek first to be reconciled and confirmed within the Catholic Church.

If you don’t desire full communion with the Catholic Church, but still desire to be married to a Catholic within the Church, you can do so, but only with permission from the bishop in accordance with the norms on “mixed marriages” prescribed by canon law (canon 1124ff).
