I’m looking for advice on a daughter receiving confirmation. What is the protocol for gifts to the candidate and the sponsor of the candidate. Any help would be appreciated. God Bless.

Any gift that will help to develop the young person’s spirituality is considered normal. If there is a biography about the confirmand’s chose saint that would be a good gift. If the confirmand has a particular attachment to a particular devotion such as the rosary a blessed rosary would be a good reminder of this sealing with the Holy Spirit.

As for the sponsor, there is no protocol that I’m aware of. My uncle was my sponsor, and as far as I know no gift was given. I have sponsored two young people and received cards of appreciation.

A small token of esteem never hurts for a sponsor, particularly if a real effort was made to be there, or the sponsor is close, or spends a lot of time with the confirmand.

My kids gave their sponsors Holy Spirit key rings.

there is no protocol. as most candidates have already received a bible, rosary and a catechism during their formation (at least in my parish) I strongly urge parents or those wishing to give a substantial gift to purchase a Daily Roman Missal, which is not cheap, but which will last a lifetime. a gift for the sponsor should come from the candidate and reflect appreciation for their role in the candidate’s life.
