Well, I was all set to choose St. Tabitha (from Acts) as my confirmation saint, but my RCIA instructor thinks she isn’t a saint. After a little more research, I’m beginning to wonder myself. She is specifically listed as being recognized by Orthodox Catholics and Lutherans, but even though I see her listed as a Catholic saint, nothing jumps out that she is a Roman Catholic saint.

Is it still ok to choose her or should I get busy now and find another one? I only have a week!

Any thoughts are appreciated.

If your RCIA instructor thinks you should change, it’s probably not a bad idea to pick someone else. There are so many wonderful saints to choose from that I’m sure it won’t be hard to find one that speaks to you.

As you’re under a little bit of a time crunch, this site: femalesaints.blogspot.com/ may be helpful because it gives a one line description of each saint. Could be a good starting point to doing a little more research (instead of looking at a list of ALL female saints and being totally overwhelmed).

Hope this helps. Congratulations on your soon to be Confirmation!

God bless,
Denise

Hi, there!

Tabitha appears to be a saint in the Orthodox community, but I cannot find her in the Catholic Encyclopedia as a recognized saint of the Church (in this case, through popular acclaim, not the formal process we use today).

Yep, I’d start looking for a new saint. How about Joan of Arc? 😉

Thank you so much for the replies. I actually decided today that St. Martha would be an excellent confirmation saint for me. As a housewife and mother, I often will let the pressing business of the day hinder me from stopping to sit at the feet of Jesus. Joan of Arc was a great suggestion, too. Such courage! I look forward to visiting the websites that were recommended. I won’t stop studying the saints; their lives are such an inspiration!

Thanks again!

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. There’s nothing in the celebration of the sacrament that requires or calls for this, so it’s entirely personal and up to you. It in no way affects the Sacrament.
