Before a young person receives the Sacrament of Confirmation, what is the written rule of how soon he must choose his Confirmation sponsor?

I know of no written rule. I am a CRE and teach Confirmation level classes. We encourage the students to begin THINKING about a sponsor right away. We talk about the importance of choosing somone who is a good Catholic role model, someone who can answer questions, and will be with them on the journey. Sooner is better so they can acutally help the student with preparation. We even have materials for those that want them, and a sponsor/candidate evening. We also require a letter from the sponsor’s pastor confirming their good standing and sometimes that takes time. Hope that helps. No rule but a few months at the least would be good.

What about when an old person receives it? Why the specification?

I don’t know about other parishes but in ours the Confirmation sponsor has no official role outside of the actual ceremony. Yes, he/she may pray for the confirmand but he/she doesn’t attend preparation, etc. Unlike, say, a sponsor in RCIA who journeys with the catechumen/candidate for reception into full communion throughout.

I’m not sure what the practice is for adult confirmands who are already Catholic as they go through RCIA. In our parish they have been catechized individually and treated like the kids in that their candidate is with them for confirmation only. Although I must say that the last time we had an adult confirmed in our parish her sponsor was her catechist.

I am an Asst DRE and a Conf catechist. We require a Notice of Confirmation that contains the Confirmand’s full name, mother’s maiden name, Church of Baptism, saint name and sponsor name. You would be surprised how many non-Catholics we get as intended sponsors. We need the info sooner than later because our secretary has to enter the info into our database and sacramental records. We generally have 150 kids in our Confirmation program and another 40 in RCIA.

We record nothing until it’s a done deal. Have seen too many last minute changes over the years. Even baptismal sponsors get changed at the last minute so baptismal certificates are never pre-printed awaiting Father’s signature.

He’s right about knowing ahead of time and verifying the eligibility of the sponsor. One family told me this year that they wanted grandma to be sponsor. “She was confirmed and married in the church but is Lutheran now is that ok?” Really? And yes, sometimes last minute changes happen but it’s easy to do the paperwork verification on a couple not 100!

We have been trying to engage the sponsors more since we know the teens really need them at this time in their lives but it’s not a requirement. The feedback has been positive as most sponsors WANT to be involved but don’t know what to do.

I don’t know your diocese. If you wish for the written rule, ask your diocese.
