Confirmation sponsor

I have been asked to be the confirmation sponsor for a good friend’s son (me RCIA 2002) that I have been involved with in Cub and Boy scouts as well as church league basketball etc. He is having some doubts(both parents Catholic) re Saints and scrupulosity. I want to send him an affirmation and tried to find the Pauline line “work out your salvation with fear and trepidation” but I can’t find it. If anyone knows the chapter and verse I would really appriciate it,

It’s in the second chapter of Paul’s letter to the Phillipians, verse 12.

The first part of the chapter is a canticle or hymn about Jesus being obedient, even to the point of death. Truly beautiful.

Philippi was a city where many in the Roman military went when they retired. Being former military, the city was very orderly and disciplined, and the Christians there exemplified that discipline and obedience. Remember that Paul was a Roman citizen. You can hear Paul using military jargon and phraseology all through his letter, speaking of serving and of risking one’s life, about taking possession of salvation as if it were a military goal to be fought for, of the enemies of Christ and of the Roman’s citizenship in Heaven. Paul really did become “All things to all people.”

Phillipians came to life for me when the military connection was pointed out. Could you use this to your advantage with the young man?

Thank you for sponsoring the young man. You will have to introduce him to the bishop using his new name.

My sponsor was so nervous that she addressed the auxiliary bishop using the Archbishop’s name. . I was 121st out of 122 being confirmed and the auxiliary bishop looked pretty wiped out - I don’t even think he noticed.

Your main responsibility for him however, is to pray for him. I will join you in that prayer.
