I choose Angela for St. Angela Merci. I wanted someone a bit different, not the ones everyone always picks. I ran across St. Angela and choose her because of her love of teaching the faith to young girls, something I also love. 😃

I chose John Paul as my confirmation name back in 1983 and I am awaiting the day (soon I hope) when I can say it is a saints name as opposed to saying they are saints names!
I share that prayer, Fergal. John Paul II… ā€œSanto Subitoā€. šŸ™‚

Let me start by saying I was only in 2nd grade when I was confirmed…maybe 3rd. It was 1958 or 1959. Most of my friends were choosing Rose, and that’s what I wanted too…mainly because my friends chose it. But I got sort of talked into Alberta because my dad’s name is Albert. My grandparents were pushing Cleofe. My sponser was my aunt whose actual name was Cleofe Giacomina Ann…Giacomina! MY name was supposed to be Cleofe since the first girl in the family has been named Cleofe for generations, but thankfully my parents said no. My sisters chose Paula and Joan for my grandfathers Paul and John. We were all in 2nd or 3rd grade. Amazingly, I can remember the evening like it was yesterday. It was a Thursday in November, and the actual Archbishop came to our church, Cardinal Joseph Ritter (I don’t remember if he was a Cardinal then or if that was later), and that was a huge deal for us. This was back when you still got a little smack on the cheek. The bishop assisting him would get the index card with your Confirmation name on it, then tell the Cardinal what the name was. He’d say his thing and slap your cheek, then move on. The bishop got confused and gave the girl next to me Alberta too. She was quite upset, but Sister told her it was ok, that her REAL confirmation name was the one she picked. My youngest sister has no recollection of hers at all.

I chose St Joaquina Vedruna de Mas

Not just because it fit my name but because she an interesting life of charity after her husband died, she seemed influential in her time, I consider her my favorite Saint

My father was named after some obscure saint, and that is the name I took for Confirmation. šŸ™‚

I chose Joan, from St. Joan of Arc. At the time, she seemed cool because she was so bold and had accomplished something spectacular. I’ve always been fighting windmills myself so I think I had I received an unconscious inspiration and strength from her.

I chose St Athanasius, because he was the only one who stood up for the truth when the whole church had gone astray (St Athanasius Contra Mundum). As a social scientist who believes in objective truth, I sometimes feel that way too!

(And I quite like arguing with Jehovah’s Witnesses! šŸ‘ )
