please can you answer a question I have , my son is due to be confirmed, he has chosen a sponsor .However his sponsor has been baptized and had communion but not yet been confirmed , can I stlll choose him , as my son is really up for him being his sponsor.

To sponsor someone for the sacrament(s) of initiation, one must have themselves completed initiation:

Can. 874 §1. To be permitted to take on the function of sponsor a person must:

1/ be designated by the one to be [confirmed], by the parents or the person who takes their place, or in their absence by the pastor or minister and have the aptitude and intention of fulfilling this function;

2/ have completed the sixteenth year of age, unless the diocesan bishop has established another age, or the pastor or minister has granted an exception for a just cause;

**3/ be a Catholic who has been confirmed **and has already received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist and who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on;

4/ not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared;

5/ not be the father or mother of the one to be [confirmed]

I had a similar problem in our parish some years back. We prepared the sponsor to be in either RCIA or the Adult Confirmation class. She then went up first in line, was confirmed, then came back and joined the line as a sponsor.

Unfortunately, it takes a few weeks instruction to prepare an adult for confirmation; so this may not be practical in your case.

sponsor needs to be confirmed. If you need one, lol, just go to the rosary everyday this week and you’ll find the right person to ask. Bring your son. Or you could have the sponsor get confirmed first but that’s probably not gonna work with the time period you got to work with.
