I have acute conflict in my life right now. My husband and I bought a house with his sister so we would be around for his aging sick mother. Now my husband and SIL have had a huge fight October, 2012 and relationships have been destroyed.

I am facing the possibility of selling our house and having permanently destroyed relationships…this sucks so bad!!! I am getting horrible emails from my SIL over the care of my MIL. I am learning not to engage b/c I honestly think she’s very hostile and mentally unstable. My husband is prepared to never talk to his sister again. She is the primary caregiver and as bad as I feel, she’s made it impossilble for us to help in the way we want to.

We took my MIL out yesterday and it was very hot and as a result, my MIL got edema. We told my SIL where we were taking her and I guess the edema is really bad today. I received a very angry email this morning…ugh! I don’t know what to do anymore.

I have tried to reason with my SIL by telling her that she needs to see that my husband (her brother) is not always in tune with what she needs and that he shows his love and support in other ways. She continues to say that he does “nothing” when it’s really not true. She also yelled profanity at me over email and said some very hurtful things about my character. As a result, I will not engage her in anyway again.

I let my 2 kids go downstairs everyday, so they can see my 1 year old neice. My SIL keeps my neice from seeing me also. My daughter asks if she can come upstairs and most times, my SIL says no, so I see my neice about once a month. It’s very sad b/c I’m her Godmother.

In all honsestly, I think I’m dealing with mental illness when it comes to my SIL. I think she definitely has a mental disorder and I have done research and I think she has Borderline Personality Disorder. I know I’m not a psychologist, but when I read about BPD, it fits her to a “T”.

I am just so tired and I do want to sell my house. The time is not right - my MIL cannot move anywhere as she’s sick. I want her last years to be somewhat stable.

I’m in a very messy situation.

I’m very sorry you are in such a stressful situation! Focus on your MIL as much as you can and try to tune out SIL to the extent possible.

Thank you. I married into a very hot headed family 🙂 Now that my MIL is getting weaker, emotions are getting out of control (mainly my SIL). The things she has said to me are just awful and then saying all of the cruel words - she also called me toxic. I have not said anything cruel to her, and yet, everytime I engage her in anyway, I get insults thrown at me about my character. It is very unpleasant.

It’s funny because my SIL’s husband is married to my husband’s first cousin. The cousin’s wife is my BIL (SIL husband) sister. Yesterday, I told her (Tina) how much I admire her that she never gets involved in family drama or gossip and she said to me, “You do not get involved in drama either. Sometimes drama finds you. There is nothing you can do about that.”

I was very surprised when she said that to me! She must know what my SIL is like also. Tina is also coming to my daughter’s birthday party and that surprised me too b/c Tina would be hearing a lot of gossip about us from my SIL and her brother.
