Many confraternities have obligations… let’s say you’re part of one, and you missed an obligation. Is this a sin, and does it affect your state of being in the confraternity?

I’m supposed to receive Communion on a certain day but didn’t make it to Confession 😦

I think it would depend on the confraternity. The rules of the confraternity I belong to clearly state that the obligations are *not *binding under pain of sin, and I know this is also the case with at least some others, if not most or all others (see, e.g., Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary, Dominican Friars, Province of St Joseph – Obligations).

Even if they were binding under pain of sin, I seriously doubt that one infraction–especially an inadvertent one–would nullify your membership.

Many Confraternities do not have obligations binding under pain of sin. If you don’t know for sure, then for sure you did not commit mortal sin :o

Try to find out 🙂

In any case - God have mercy :o - I do not think you should skip Holy Communion under this circumstance. And I don’t think this affects your membership in the confraternity.

Be more attentive when joining a confraternity 😉

Thanks for the replies! I think I do need Confession because it’s been a while 😦 I haven’t been able to go for some time.

In any case I emailed the Confraternity to ask what happens if one of the obligations is not met… . 😦 I really want to meet all the obligations, there’s just this problem

You cannot be a perfectionist 🙂 Confraternities are like a “first step”. What if someday you enter a religious third order with a rule and constitutions? And what if you were to enter a religious order? You would be in great anguish if you think you can perfectly keep everything!

The Lord looks at your intention, and at your commitment. He does not ask for the impossible. He does not ask you to be perfect today, but to walk on the path of perfection, so that He may perfect you one day at a time. That’s the point of obligations, constitutions, rules. To purify us one day at a time. The perfect do not need to follow any of these things. That is to say, in heaven! For only then we will be perfect.

If you share the confraternity name, maybe someone else here knows. Yes, it’s good to confess every month, every two weeks, or even more frequently. Having a confessor helps, because he can tell us how often he wants to see us depending on how our spiritual life is going 😉
