I really do find the call of confraternity. How do people know which one to be involved with? I’d like to hear others’ experiences of their confraternities.

I have chosen by what is important to me (as far as emphasis) in my spirituality. For instance, I joined the Rosary Confraternity since I said the Rosary anyway so why not get (at least - depending on where you live) spiritual assistance.

For me, I am happy to be in formation with the Confraternity of Penitents.

How do I know this is a group I want to be involved with? That is what the 4 year formation period is about, as we slowly make changes to our lives, in accordance with the Franciscan Rule of 1221. I am starting out my second year of formation, and so far I am convinced that this group is my spiritual home.

Thank you both! I checked out both confraternities. I am very much interested in the Rosary Confraternity, but I’m on the opposite side of the continent. Still, though, I would feelo blessed by joining in. I am trying so hard to say the Rosary more. I do understand how important the Rosary is. How do you set aside time for it?
To change the topic of my thread, my major goal is to become much more religious, so much more Catholic. This requires many changes in me. I’d like to clean up my life- not watch trashy TV shows or movies, no trashy/vulgar music, no gossip, no profanity. I crave a much more moral life b/c I know it is the right thing.
I’m having a problem changing my old habits. I’ve made a bit of progress, but I want more. How do I get out of the old habits? I want to pray more, esp the rosary. I also want to bring this into the family- just me and my husband right now. (God willing, kids in the next couple years!) My husband is a strident, conservative Catholic.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I want to be a dedicated, conservative Catholic.

I am not connected with it but the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter has a Confraternity which you can join.

There is also the World Apostolate of Fatima. You have certain obligations and receive similar benefits to being enrolled in the Brown Scapular (which you wear). This is a Vatican Recognized Public Association of the Faithful. Free to join.

As I have mentioned here before (while it is not a Confraternity) there is the Militia of the Immaculata. Free to join. You have certain obligations and wear the Miraculous Medal as a sign of your membership. consecration.com/
These are all good ways to belong to something Church recognized, be part of a worldwide community and deepen your spirituality.
As for time, you just make time. Also, sometimes the obligations over lap and that allows you to belong to more than one. However, do not over commit or you will be too spread out.

By the way, I am also an Auxilliary Member in the LEGION OF MARY. Many parishes of a brance of the Legion of Mary. and that is a wonderful starting place

Thanks for the suggestions! I am currently researching, after eliminating others, the Discalced Carmelities, Brothers and Sisters of Penance, and the other Penance confraternity. (It’s related to BSP but I forget the name!)
If I decide that I am not called to the Carmelites or the Penance, then I will go with the Rosary confraternity.

The enemy has infilitrated my life! Of course the enemy hates losing someone else to GOD!. Since Friday evening, I have much of my desire to be more Catholic. I feel less confident about joining a Confraternity or Third Order. (Friday afternoon, the emails I sent to one Third Order bounced back- ugh!) I wanted to increase my prayer life, but I have lost all interest. I had high hopes last weekend of saying rosaries, listening to EWTN, going to Confession.
Instead, all I got was marital tension and less spirituality.
Has anyone else ever been harassed by the enemy? I am ashamed to bring myself before Jesus for letting the enemy influence me this weekend. I feel awful. I’d appreciate any support.

Certainly the enemy isn’t going to want to peacefully “allow” anything to get you closer to God! Start small and take baby steps. Whenever you think of it shoot a prayer to God - just one word “Jesus” or “Mary” or a favorite Saint. Say a decade of the Rosary while showering or while going to sleep at night (even tho’ it’s not the way you’d most prefer it is much, much better than nothing and more will then come much easier). When you go into the grocery store ask for a Saints help (or when you start work in the morning or at lunchtime or whenever). The point being not to start with a lot, just enough to ask God for the Graces to talk to Him more. Have little conversations with Him whenever you think of it - just like a good friend, He is you know.
If you get the chance, after a while, just go sit with Him in the Blessed Sacrament.

Thanks, Brigid. I am slowly working on getting better. I think it’s good to clean up the cobwebs before I pursue a confraternity or third order. I have seriously thought about it. For me, and the way I work, a confraternity is best. I have always had devotion to Mary, have always felt peace when praying the Rosary, so I am probably going to affiliate with the Rosary Confraternity. We are all called to different things.
My spirituality has been an uphill battle, of course. I am reading The Soul of the Apostolate. It is an amazing book. I am highlighting passages on every page. I have a lot of habits I need to break. I will be so much closer to GOD. That’s all I’m striving for, being closer to GOD.
Also, thanks be to GOD, the Holy Spirit is making me purer and purer every day! I also know that Blessed Mother is intercessing for me and many Saints. First, I have decided to dress more modestly and feminine. This is a big change from a few years ago, when I was “dressing with the times”. I reevaluated my wardrobe. I have also purchased some skirts. (Nothing out of our price range.) For me, skirts make me feel more feminine and thus, like I’m going into the role for which GOD made me!
I donated my old clothes to Planet Aid, which gives to those in need in developing countries. It is a blessing to give, rather than receive cash in a yard sale. I feel happily blessed by my anonymous donation. (Pray for me, fellow CAFers!)
What else? I’m cleaning up the media I am exposed to. I am literally losing interest in pop shows that deal with lots of sex and negativity. This abstinence was a conscious choice, but now it’s become a natural repulsion. My husband put on a show we have always enjoyed, but this time, the talk of gratuitous sex turned me off. Husband likes it for the medical parts, but I couldn’t really tune into that, either. I said, “This is not healthy”.
Cleaning up my language, less gossip, trying to be positive, more friendly to people, etc.

It sounds as though your on a great journey that is sure to make you more happy, fulfilled and holy.
I’d like to mention another Confraternity to further confuse you!
I am a member of the Confraternity Of The Passion, which is part of the Passionist order. They are a wonderful order of religous that specialise in retreats, missionary work, and contemplation and prayer. I have never met such wonderful priests. They pray deeply on Christ crucified, and try to make us understand it’s importance to our salvation and its relation in the lives we lead now. I have also been invested in the black scapular of the Passionists, which is a wonderful sacramental for confraternity members which when worn in proper grace, offers indulgences and brings me even closer to this order. Members can also take vows and live a consecrated life, and I am now considering taking this next step
The Passionists are much like the Franciscans, Dominicans or Benedictines, except for whatever reason, they don’t have a third order, but they do have this Confraternity which meets once a month at their monastery, and I always try to attend. I think my attendance their is very important for my formation and understanding of this special charism. You might want to consider joining a confraternity that has local meetings you can attend.
My membership with this group has led me down a similar path that you are experiencing now. Stay on your path, and don’t be swayed. Pray to the Holy Spirit to help you choose the right confraternity and you won’t go wrong. God Bless…

So is knowing that I’ll have an entire confraternity praying with me and for me. Yes, both are powerful. It’d be nice, though, to have a little more.
We have charismatic prayer groups in my area, but they are simply not for me. The young adult groups are weak. There’s a new one starting up, I pray that it will get stronger in time. Now that my production of GREASE is over, I have more time to focus on this new group!
Something else I’m also passionate about is helping young people live chaste lives. I’d like to help them remain virgins until they are married or stop having premarital sex if they’ve started. I messed up in that area up until I met my husband! I want to help others live the Catholic way!
Still finding the confraternity for me, but so far, I’m really feeling the rosary!
