Scripture says that all souls will be resurrected at Judgement Day. My understanding of this is that when we die we go to rest in wait for the day we will all be resurrected for our final destination - Heaven or hell
However Christians I know at Church and even priests talk of and pray for people in pergatory and in Heaven. My father recently passed away and I have felt that he is with Christ.
Does anyone know which is correct?

When a Catholic dies they either die in a state of mortal sin or in a state of grace.
They then face The Particular Judgement.
If they die in a state of mortal sin they are condemned to Hell (immediately).
If they die in a state of grace they are saved (immediately). Being saved means either going straight to Heaven or probably in most cases Purgatory first then Heaven later. However, both means a person is saved. Frankly, if I die and find I’m in Purgatory first I will be very happy knowing I am saved. Everyone in Purgatory goes later to Heaven (when God decides it is time) and never to Hell.

It is natural for all of us to think our departed loved ones are in Heaven because that’s where we want them to be. However, we do not know where they are. Only God knows.

Hi Blueriver, our Church teaches that there are two judgements. The first is the particular judgment, which we receive immediately after death and seals our souls either to heaven/purgatory or hell. If we end up in purgatory, we are assured of heaven eventually.

The second is the final judgement, where each one’s deeds will be revealed for what they are plainly, to the entire world. we will receive our bodies back at this time.

I believe it will be our complete bodies with all organs working 100%. I don’t know what the teachings are about eating and drinking and bodily functions and if the resurrection applies to those in Hell either.

Actually, there is also another way of looking at it. When we die, we are still separated (body from soul) due to the stain of original sin. That is what death is - separation from our complete selves. Whether we go to Heaven or to Purgatory, our bodies will be resurrected on the last day. They will immediately be joined with our souls and complete our own unity as human beings. Our bodies will be glorified, just as the body of Christ is glorified in Heaven now.

Now, when a pereson dies, we really don’t know the state of their soul, and whether or not they are in Heaven or in the state of purgatory. That is the decision of the Lord. Just because we may ‘feel’ that a person is in Heaven isn’t necessarily so. It is a good practice to pray for those who have passed on. Our prayers assure the one passed on that we have his or her spiritual welfare at stake, and that they assuredly will get to Heaven if in purgatory. Of course, if they are there already, no prayer is wasted, and God uses the power and efficacy of our prayers to save others.

We know from the Gospels that the Resurrected Savior ate and drank. There different accounts of this.
