You make an excellent point. Charity does not mean we are always “nice” and inoffensive, in the sense that we should just bend over instead of standing up for the truth. That’s why Jesus cleaned out the temple…He was being charitable by standing up for righteousness and telling the money changers they were wrong to do business in the house of the Lord.Unfortunately the idea that speaking the truth is equal to uncharity is a strong one in modern society.
Unfortunately, our culture is so fanatical about “tolerance,” that people are afraid to speak up. We should speak the truth in love, but many are afraid to rock the boat and be accused of being hateful. Charity is loving through actions…Jesus’ actions in the temple and the washing of the disciples’ feet are excellent examples of this.
