Confused about Mass Cards

When my boyfriend passed away, my grandmom gave me a mass card to give to the family, that said a church somewhere in Ohio would say one mass, daily, for him forever.

We live in NJ-- neither my family, my boyfriend, his family, or me, has ever lived in or been to Ohio.

My questions:
Why was this card for Ohio?
Can you get “forever” mass cards for their own church?
Is it weird that I gave them that card?

I’ve never heard of such a thing… you can have a Mass said for specific intention… but daily forever?

Yes, you can make the arrangements to have a Mass dedicated to a particular person forever.

The particular religious community that offers up those Masses (and the Masses are for more than one individual each day) do this as a fund-raising effort. They will indeed offer up a daily Mass, in which the names of each and every person that has made the arrangements for this service, are included in their Mass intention.

Generally, your local parish will offer a Mass, or even a series of Masses, for any one particular person. But rarely do they offer them for a large group of people at the same time. And they do not usually offer this service on a forever basis.

i thought that it was once a year, also… it was apparently one daily mass a day for someone, forever.

i want to know why they were from a church in Ohio tho… does that even matter?

Do you recall if the church in Ohio was a special Mission church? I have not heard of a regular parish offering a perpetual enrollment for Masses being offered. However, some missions such as the Perpetual Help Society run by the Redptorists do offer a perpetual enrollment. They also have Mass Cards available for just special occassions like birthdays, or funerals, or Christmas and Easter.

A person using the Mass cards gives a donation to support the church or the mission or in some cases to support the actual needs of the priest. In thanksgiving for your support, the priests offers Mass for you or your loved ones that you have enrolled.

I don’t think it matters where a church is located, the power of prayer transcends all boundaries. There are numerous missions, societies, orders, etc. that offer prayers and masses- you might ask your grandmother for more information about it. Perhaps she has a personal connection to this one.
