How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!

Matthew 24:21
For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now–and never to be equaled again.**

Im a bit confused by these verses, why will this time be tough for women carrying or nursing babies? Also why would it matter if it happened in winter or on the sabbath?
 
It is harder during wartime when you having little babies and winter is harsher than summer but I have always wondered about the Sabbath part.

You were not permitted to walk more than 2000 cubits from your house on the Sabbath without breaking it, according to the interpretation set by the rabbis.
 
The Jews were only allowed to walk a certain distance on the sabbath. That’s why in Acts 1:12 it says the mountain Jesus ascended into heaven was a ‘‘sabbath’s day journey.’’ from Jerusalem. So what Jesus is basically saying is they are going to need to be able to flee fast and far to escape the coming tribulation. Farther than a sabbath’s day journey at least.

On the Sabbath all of the gates to the city would be lock closed, for the reasons that other have mentioned no work permitted and and walking and carrying something was considered work. That is why the gates would be close to limit anyone from working.

Yes, but only some regions get winter weather, this seems to imply it wont effect everyone, just those in certain areas…??

So God would still hold people to this law, even if the tribulation was going on?!!! WOW.

My wife and I were just listening to Dr. Brant Pitre earlier tonight on this subject (this is the presentation).

When foreign armies are at the gate of Jerusalem to attack the city, people don’t want to be there. They want to be on their way elsewhere.

According to Dr. Pitre: In the winter the creeks and rivers run high and this would make an untimely escape especially difficult for the women who had little children, most especially for the infants.

This might be helpful too.

Of course not.

It simply means people won’t walk more than 2000 cubits from their home on the Sabbath because the rabbis said so, not because God will smite them.
 
That section of the Bible is called the Olivette Discourse.

Jesus is talking about the destruction of the Jerusalem in 70AD. It’s not about the end of the world.

In fairness, it could also have some prophetical warnings about the days just before the Second Coming.

The prophesy was a direct prophesy of the destruction of the Temple in 70AD by the Romans. They burned and destroyed everything, and tore down every single stone of the Temple. They completely razes the city of Jerusalem. The people had to flee for their lives, and those with young ones and infants found escaping much more difficult.

There may also be a deeper meaning to the prophesy related to the end times as well, but don’t assume it won’t hit everyone. Jesus is warning us to hope that it won’t happen in winter, so some people will experience the end times in cold weather, and others won’t (since northern and southern hemispheres have opposite seasons.)
