Confused about sins

Hey all,

I’m confused about some sins.

Pride is supposed to be a sin but I don’t get why.
Like people will say things like -
"Do you have no pride …’
“You should be proud of yourself …”
“Take some pride in yourself …”
etc.
Can I please have some opinions and examples of this sin, please.

Also depression as a sin I don’t really understand that either.

I want to change my ways and have been reading up on confession to make a really good proper one but these two deadly sins confusing me.
 
Pride as an english word – has all sorts of meaning that are not referring to the sin of pride.

Depression is usually a condition …not something usually referred to as a sin (something to seek perhaps help regarding…not do penance for).
 
Depression is not a sin.

The seven deadly sins are: pride, envy, anger (not the emotion, but hanging on to a grudge, plotting revenge and things of that nature,) sloth (of the spiritual kind,) avarice, gluttony and lust.

When the bible speaks about pride it is talking about a group of lions lol. Just kidding. But like someone else says, the word does have many meanings.

The word pride in this instance is synonmous with supercilious which is taken from the supercilium of the cockodoo (the feathers that stand up on its head) or the supercilium of the Rooster. It means some one who struts around like a bird. We want to realize that whatever talents or skills we have or whatever we look like it is a gift from God and should not make us feel better than anyone else.

As far as depression goes it could be argued that a person that is depressed sometimes likes to hide away and avoid other people, which can be extremely dangerous to our spirituality. This is a clinical sickness the same as diabetes is and therefore can only be called a sin in the extent that it makes us fall short of perfection but it is not something that God will condemn you for. That is unless you choose not to do anything about it and it results in suicide or something and then I guess only God knows how he would deal with a situation like that. A person that is mentally ill is still ill.

What does avarice mean?? I thought that meant depression.

Important to note the emotion of anger can be involved in the sin of anger.
 
Sinful pride is like thinking your better then others. Not listening to leaders and elders because you think your smarter then they are. That leads to mocking people with less money and worldly wealth. Pride is said to be “The root of all sin”. Be humble, everything we have is a gift from god. :gopray2::gopray2:

A journey back into the confessional is not going to end your suffering in life…God uses suffering as a tool to teach…You could say suffering brings new life in Christ…Understanding this will end your self-centered suffering and redirect it outwards with a helping hand that will help others and you .Patience, grace and charity will become your pain reliever…Your post reads to me like your heart aches for more peace…You will find this peace because you are looking but time is not on your side…You already know the truth but do not want to witness it…I wish to suffer a daily death in a righteous mind and body but know its a fools dream…Why… Because of pride and other things know to be right but done wrong by me…Its impossible to avoid…Jestergirl…Your already in the boat but you need to row it.Let your heart be your compass and Jesus your sails…All directions lead to Jesus…No earthly person is without sin…Its how we manage it…This is something to think about…Did pride make Jesus overturn the money changers tables?..I believe I could make a case for debate about that…Peace to you and yours and may the sun shine and the clouds burst lightning and thunder on your voyage of discovery…

Oh sorry. I guess I got a little deep there. I think you got the point though. Don’t think too highly of yourself because everything is a gift of God and being depressed is a medical condition not a sin.

What I meant was because of sin we all get sick and die so you could look the sickness being a result of sin but not the sin being the result of the sickness. I hope that makes more sense lol.
 
The one thing that you have to remember is that no one deserves life. That is why God’s life is referred to as undeserved kindness.

Sometimes when something happens to us we say we are lucky or we are unlucky but really we are neither.
Sometimes we say we are cursed or blessed but very rarely is this the case either.
The fact is that we are loved by God and shown kindness by God and none of us are worthy or deserved of it but we get it nonetheless.
Jesus said that if the times were not cut short that NO ONE would survive. That tells us something.
The best we can do is try and read our bible daily, gain a close relationship with God and do our best to follow his instruction. He can read your heart and he knows if you are trying or just pretending to try. He knows if you truly love him.
That’s all that matters.
