Let me say first that I am merely a teenager and so I am at least 4-6 years away from considering marriage, so this is not a question that directly affects my life at the moment.
However, after hearing about the theology of the body as described by many here, and trying to find something in the catechism or other documents that supports it, I came up empty. I finally googled it and discovered that it is outlined in a series of speeches by John Paul II, on the interpretation of Humanae Vitae. My question is…why is this theology of the body considered binding when it seems to be nothing more than His Holiness’ personal opinion on what a marriage should be? I am not one to question the Church or simply do my own thing in defiance of Her, but this doesn’t make very much sense to me. I am also not downplaying the authority of the Pope to interpret doctrine, but it is my understanding that unless he speaks ex cathedra, his word is simply weighted by his knowledge and stature, and can be disagreed with legitimately. Why then could a married couple not simply refrain from contraception or other clearly immoral sexual actions, yet not follow the interpretation presented in the theology of the body(ie in oral sex and other acts)?
Thanks to anyone who responds. . . reading posts about how this is a set thing that is essentially law leaves me feeling like I missed something really big or am deeply misunderstanding something about the Church(admittedly I am a convert of a little more than a year and a half).
