Me again. I reviewed some of your posts and I was wondering if you ever got rid of that rosary your friend gave you after visiting a Spiritist?

If not, I would definitely ask a priest about the best way to dispose of it and ask to have your house blessed.

OnegirlinChrist thanks for such a great response. You know one of the things that bugs me is that while Im taking this time to think about the faith the church says im in mortal sin if I dont attend mass. Thats one rule I really dont like. Its like we dont have the liberty that Christ died for. Lately, I havent felt much like going to church and yes im thinking a lot about it and scared of hell. But it does seem to me that the Catholics are much more unified for longer than protestants.

Rose- how did you know I had a rosary from a friend? I dont remember sharing it. She did live with a psychic for a time. She said the rosaries she gave me were from the vatican and blessed by st. Francis. So that is why I have treasured them. It does seem like theyve protected me because my ex was abusive and I was finally able to break free from his abuse the week those beads arrived!

Thanks everyone for your prayers and responses, so generous. You know I have been feeling God’s presence more at Alanon meetings than at church and I just don’t get it, why? I do know that people share from their heart there and its a spiritual program. But ultimately, my salvation, my soul. I have to trust in God Onegirl you are right. Trust is a scary thing but I need to do it. I just hate the mortal sin rule if you dont go to church.

You are so welcome! Well, wondering if this might help per the mortal sin and missing mass concept…

Keep in mind that for something to be a mortal sin, the sin has to be done with full knowledge and full consent. In other words, a person’s attitude has to be, “I know this is seriously sinful, but I don’t care and I’m doing it anyway.”

The term “mortal sin” can start to sound legalistic and scary. We might be tempted to reject that concept because it sounds mean spirited and technical. Remember, mortal sin is ultimately a term invented to help us grasp a concept: total rejection of God. That’s what mortal sin is: “God, you said something was sacred and off limits, but I don’t care and so from the depths of my heart I will desecrate that thing because I choose my way over your way.”

The fact that you are thinking about missing mass is a sign to me that you don’t have “full knowledge” about the importance of the mass. The mass is the moment when Heaven and Earth are united and Jesus comes into our presence. We offer up the Body and Blood of our Lord to atone for the sins of the world, and are nourished by his own Body and Blood, grafting us to him physically and spiritually. He’s asked us to be there because we are members of His Mystical Body and He died to give us the Eucharist to eat. He wants to nourish His church and get us ready for our wedding day in Heaven. We, the Church, are his Bride!!

If you really process that, I don’t think you’ll want to miss the mass! You wouldn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to physically be in the presence of Jesus Christ, would you? At a Protestant service, they sing songs about Jesus and hear sermons about Him. At a Catholic Mass, Jesus really and actually comes! And you consume the Body and Blood of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in obedience to His own commandment. There is just no way any Christian would want to miss out on that, if they actually understood that’s what is happening.

Until you understand that, the “no missing mass” thing is just a rule. It doesn’t mean anything. And so if you don’t go to mass, it’s probably because you don’t understand why it’s so important. You think it’s just a rule. You’re not fully converted. And because you’re not fully converted, you may not be sinning with full knowledge and it may not be a mortal sin at all.

Mortal sins don’t just happen in a, “whoops! I didn’t follow a rule” kind of way.

Mortal sins occur when the heart, from it’s depths, rejects something that God has said is sacred and essential.

If you believe in Hell at all and that it’s possible to go there for bad conduct, you have to believe that mortal sins are possible. Because that’s who Hell is for: people who reject God definitely.

Jesus indeed came to free us from Hell and sin, but not so that we could sin without accountability. He came to give us all the graces we need to become Holy.

No one is going to Hell for merely breaking a rule. People go to Hell because they reject God, they have contempt for what is holy, and they refuse to serve God. The church teaches about “mortal sin” to give us a way of thinking and talking about serious sin. Never reduce it to a term in a simplistic way, remember that it describes a concept: serious concept for God.

I hope that helps a little?? I remember having similar questions before, too. It’s great that you are being honest with yourself about addressing your concerns. That is the only way to grow in the spiritual life.

Praying for you…

*O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, who brought forth the Son of God still remaining a Virgin, assist us in this necessity. O Star of the Sea, help us, and show us that you are our Mother.

O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, we humbly ask you from the depths of our heart to help us in this necessity. There are none who can withstand your power. O show us that you are our Mother.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Sweet Mother, we place this cause in your hands. Amen*

Onegirl in Christ I just wanted to say thank you so much for your posts. You are really helping me so much. Im thinking this weekend of going to confession and going back to church. I dont have to understand everything to go back to church. Sometimes its a matter of trust. Trusting in God for my eternal salvation. Trust that He is the good shepherd who will lead my soul home to be with him if that is what I desire. You know its just verses that say narrow is the way and few that find it scare me, but I have to also remember right after that it says what is impossible with man is possible with God 😉 Thanks again for your wisdom and encouragement! blessings.

Please pray for me. I left Protestantism about a year ago and became a Catholic. I now feel so confused between the two. Ive stopped going to mass Im just not feeling close to God there. I feel scared to death of going to hell. I can’t shake my fear and feel no assurance of salvation in my Catholic faith. Please pray for me. part of my fear is due to a psychological experience I had where I was in hell and its scared the pants off of me. Please pray that i can live more by faith and find my way to peace.
It sounds like you are on a stepping stone but it is up to you whether you move forward or back. Go on Amazon and search for the book ‘Surprised by Truth’ by Patrick Madrid. It is about 11 converts from different religions to the Catholic faith and their struggles and how they overcame them. Go online and read into the CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH at vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_INDEX.HTM
Or buy it as a book. Next, go on You Tube and search ‘Journey Home’, there you will find videos about many more converts and there stories. Good luck and keep searching out a path towards Heaven.

I strayed away from the Catholic Church in the '70s and '80s and It was the fear of hell that started me back. I wish I could say it was out of total love for God but I don’t think I really knew how to love anyone. I had to learn that. I also wasn’t saved in an instant, I had to climb the stairs that leads us to perfect faith and I plan on to continue climbing and searching to learn how to be closer to God. I hope that I will never feel that I have to stop climbing and searching for God’s love.

The Lord loves us unconditionally. He wants us to love Him back by picking up our cross and following him.

He has given us the Church and all the helps we need to be saved.

The Eucharist is the most awesome gift we have! Jesus is the Bread of Life, the Manna from Heaven!

We receive the Resurrected Christ in the Eucharist. The Church teaches that, by the authority of the God-given magisterium of the Church that cannot err in matters of faith and morals. We don’t have to “feel” the Lord’s Presence, but believe and act on it. When the Lord knows it is best He can console us with a feeling of His love.

Our Blessed Virgin Mother Mary will help you to understand this. She was given to us by Jesus at the foot of the cross. Ask for her intercession!
