I’m interested in wearing a scapular, so the question is, which one?

There are plenty! And in looking at internet materials, there’s a lot of ambiguous description about their particular indulgences, etc. The descriptions I’ve read just state that a pope long ago approved the scapular and granted indulgences to go with it. … so how do I know WHAT those are, and whether this is all still current?

Any notion of how to proceed?

Normally when you buy a scapular or in the case of the Brown Scapular which is often distributed in Church itself, instructions come with it. Some require investiture in the Church. Others don’t. Some are issued and regulated by various religious orders others not. It really all depends who your particular devotion is to. Probably the most popular and most widely worn is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. That one comes with the sabbatine privilige as long as you wear the scapular and perform the other duties required. If you are interested i would reccomend that you speak to your Pastor. He could steer you in the right direction.

What is a sabbatine privilige?

What is a sabbatine privilige?
The Sabatine Privilige is a grace granted to those who die wearing the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Blessed Mother revealed that anyone who died wearing this scapular, and who had complied with all obligations associated with the wearing of the scapular sould not suffer eternal fire.

It was later revealed through one of the Popes, I can’t remember which one however, that the Blessed Mother would release from Purgatory the soul of whomsoever died wearing the scapular on the Saturday following his or her death. Thus the term sabbatine or Saturday privilige.

There are two privileges granted to the scapular wearer. The Sabbatine privilege is the second one.

The main promise of the Scapular is preservation from the eternal fire. This comes from wearing the scapular, and I do believe, practicing a devotion to Mary. Carmelnet.org has the rules and regulations:
The Scapular holds us to live as authentic Christians in line with the teaching of the Gospel, to receive the sacraments, to profess our special devotion to the Blessed Virgin, which should be expressed each day, at least by saying the Hail Mary three times.
This is probably the most important one. Note, I have seen conflicting evidence on this, but I tend to go with this. Other sites will tell you that the special devotion you must practice is “the Little Office of Our Lady” which can be “commuted by any priest to a rosary.”

The reason why I disagree with the EWTN link (the second link) and agree with the first is this Fr. William Most article, my tie-breaker, and besides, Carmelnet.org is actually carmelite, so I suppose they know what they are talking about.

Anyway, Fr. sets up some persuasive reasoning. He asks, what is necessary to gain this great promise of our Lady’s (that is, protection from eternal fire)?
What conditions are required to gain so great a promise? First of all, the vision spoke of this as a privilege for “all Carmelites.” So it is necessary to be in some way affiliated with the Order of Carmel. For most Catholics, this is accomplished through enrollment in the Confraternity of the Scapular.
But is there anything else required? Not a few Catholics -including some who should know better - insist that she should know what the requirements are. That she mentioned nothing other than wearing the Scapular at the time of death. Therefore we must not add anything else.
Hence, why I reject the contrary reasoning about supposedly needing to recite the Little Office of Our Lady or a Rosary as the special devotion. My reasoning goes further, though. I can assign a reason why they err in saying the Little Office or Rosary for the Scapular-- and that is because such things are required for the Sabbatine privilege.

Fr. Most is most illustrative once again:
There is also a Sabbatine Privilege. The report is that Pope John XXII hada vision of Our Lady on March 3, 1322, in which liberation from purgatory was promised on the first Saturday after death, on three conditions**: 1)Wear the Scapular 2) Observe 6th and 9th commandments according to one’s state in life 3) say the Little Office, or, if illiterate, observance of the fasts of the Church plus abstinence on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The requirement of the Office can be commuted by a priest who has the faculty.
** A daily rosary is a common commutation. Those bound to the large office
fulfill the condition by saying it.
The original copy of the bull was lost. This is not too strange in view of the disturbed state of Rome after the sack of 1527. Some other documents of the same Pope are also lost. There was a copy of the bull, given by Pope Clement VII, dated May 15, 1528, but for some reason it was never
solemnly issued, and so is technically invalid. The same Pope on August 12, 1530 did issue a transcript, but it promised only special help, not liberation.
So, the Sabbatine privilege is the second (alleged) privilege of the Brown Scapular, which consists of being released from purgatory the Saturday after one’s death.

Note Fr. Most’s qualifications about it, and also the fact that it is absent from the Carmelnet.org website.

However, as you can see, as I bolded it, the Sabbatine privilege requires saying the Little Office, or a Rosary if commuted.

Now, even if the Sabbatine privilege isn’t actual, I would say this. Anyone who has a devotion to our Lady such that they wear the Brown Scapular and recite the Rosary daily has little to fear, and everything to hope as regards our Lady’s help in Purgatory. I cannot imagine that our Lady, who is so benevolent and loving, could fail to graciously reward someone who does such a thing. That being said, simply saying a Rosary every day, especially if one does it in conjunction with Confession so as to gain indulgences, seems to be a surefire way to reduce the possibility of a long stay in Purgatory.

Last notes: I too have the Scapular water does. My friend Lee got it for me down in Washington DC. She attends Catholic University, and nearby is the Basillica of the Immaculate Conception. Not surpisingly, they sell Scapulars. In fact, they sell those very nice Scapulars and very cheaply, that is, for a dollar. It’s a good way to get a Scapular!

I’ll wear the scapular and pray the Rosary. It isn’t difficult.

If i get a brown scapular, do i have to bring it to a carmelite to get it blessed? Or will any priest do?

you can bring it to any priest. The blessing and enrollment of the brown scapular is different than those of rosary, cross, statues though. My parish priest used a book with some special prayers.
