Confused ??

I don’t think it’s petty to get caught up on small details like that. Every word of the Bible is from God…right down to the seemingly arbitrary “a” and “the”. Each time we read a particular passage of the Bible…something different often stands out to us…something really little like that…and it helps us understand a passage on an even deeper level.

A lot of times, i will get a plain old English dictionary and look up the meanings and roots of common words like “meek” or “repent”…and reading all the different explanations and definitions leads to new revelations about what the word is saying.

What is important here, is the message that God wants us to know, and that is how the talents were used to make the vestments, not so much as to the composition of the material used.

I will get heat for this, but if you speak English, I highly recommend the New King James Version. This is because the KJV of 1611 was very nearly removed from Papal communion and encompasses all Catholic doctrine in perfect English with the best possible translations. The NKJV solves the riddle of archaic English.

I have studied Scripture in the original tongues, and unfortunately, most Catholic translations inject changes for the sake of change to differentiate between “Protestant” translations and Catholic translations. I have found that the Protestant translations are more efficient in communicating Catholic truths - as strange as that may sound - because of the choices made by Catholic translators to play polemical games with the words in English translated from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts.

This is confined to English speaking people in the USA. I cannot comment on other languages or locations. If you want the truest, most accurate translation of the Bible in English, you cannot go wrong with the KJV or the New KJV.

I love the NKJV carried & used mine so much back when I was a teen that it looks really old even though its only 5 years old LOL 😃 (Still love that little Bible, though I usually carry my new RSV-CE with me instead, it has a zipper on the side so that the pages stay nice & neat )

Do you know if they make a NJKV with the Catholic deuterocanonical books?
 
The KJV has many defects. See this article, written by a Protestant:

Also, the manuscripts used as source text were more limited than those available today. And critical analysis of the various manuscripts which were available was lacking.

The KJV was traslated during a time period when Catholics were persecuted in England, when priests were hunted down and imprisoned, and worse. The idea that the KJV is one of the Bible for Catholics is absurd.

The NKJV does not make use of any modern scholarship, nor of any currently available manuscripts, but merely updates the language of the KJV, and so the defects of the KJV generally remain.

I tend to agree with Ron on the KJV. However, if you are looking for an “updated” KJV that includes the Deuterocanonicals, you can go: tmbible.com/
I can’t vouch for this in any way, but I simply know it exists.

Haha…I didn’t mean as in Old English. I meant like ‘good ole boy’ only ‘English dictionary’ in place of boy…lol.

Here is a wonderful discussion mailing list that you can ask any questions concerning Greek, these are professors who will help you, they have help me beyond words ibiblio.org/bgreek/

I also recommend using flash cards, even make your own if you have to!

Rosary Girl, I am 99% sure its out there - I think I own a copy (my books are in storage, I am Soldier currently in Korea). I love that translation, too.

Totally off topic…

Peace to you CJ…my hubby is a soldier in Afghanistan, but when he gets back next year, his next duty station is Korea with a command sponsorship…woo hoo…so I can go with him!!! It will be his second tour in Korea but it will be my first over seas experience ever!

He loved Korea, just hated being there alone. He says the people and culture are great and he thought Seoul and the surrounding area was really neat. And he just can’t stop talking about shopping in Osan!
