Ireland’s current tricolor flag originates from the 1916 rebellion and later war of independence.
Instead of “later war of independence”, did you mean the Irish Civil War. The Easter Rebellion was the start of the War of Independence was it not?

I’m not sure if somebody already said this, but tattoos can be sinful, a violation of the 5th commandment.

This excerpt is from “Introduction to Catholicism” from Midwest Theological Forum. We use this text for our high school confirmation classes.

“Because the body has a dignity granted to it by God, care must be taken to respect and protect it. No exterior reason or end justifies the mutilation of the body…The fad of having oneself tattooed could be a mutilation with no necessary reason or justification.”

Similarly, plastic surgery done with vanity as the rationale (but not reconstructive surgery) is also against this commandment. As is body piercing, etc.

When done for purposes of vanity, it says to God that what he gave you isn’t good enough, and you’re going to fix it.

its been on the apologist part that the cc doesnt state anything specific about tatoos, hmm look at me quoteing the cc 😃

I think the vanity or motive behind a tatoo or anything else is key, I agree with you there.

wow, neat info!

i’ve been looking for a book or something that has good pictures from the book of kells. do you know of any?

yeah i’d like to learn more about my ancestry, just don’t know how, what it costs, etc.
Try this website: isos.dias.ie/

Also, I highly recommend getting a copy of The Story of the Irish race by Seumus MacManus.

Where are you from Sonic? if you dont mind me/us asking? Can you recommend any trust worthy sites for reading up on Ireland in general, I was also think of picking up some Irish literature, have to find out why they saved the world, I figure thats a unwritten requirement to know 😃

As for sites for ancestry, I had found this one seems good dont know

Are you looking for genealogy resources or cultural information?

I meant the 1916 Easter rebellion. The leaders of 1916 surrendered (if you remember), but the 1916 rebellion lead immediately to Irish war for independence, and then the Irish civil war. All three historical events follow each other. You could call it one singular event, or three seperate events. It depends on how you look at it. Sorry if I confused anything. 🙂

Here’s the best online resource I know for the Book of Kells:

tcd.ie/info/trinity/bookofkells/

bookofkells.com/

You might try your library’s Art section (public and local college). If you’re lucky, then you may find one of the over sized book photographic reproductions of the manuscript itself. My old college library used to have one of these volumes. I used to take it home every chance I got in order to study it.

apologies for posting four times

Hey thanks, Ive ordered that book at chapters, I will let you know how it goes. I took a peek at that site too. Actually Im looking for both info. Cultural and genealogy,

I have to get a hold of my cousin and see if she has Grandmas birth certificate and I guess death. Im hoping otherwise I will have to dig. I know they lived in Waterford but not sure where she was born. 🤷 Grandma met Grandpa in England when she was in nursing school, they had my Aunt, served in the war, came to Canada and then Mom. I have another cousin to ask as well about things.

If I can get the info together then Id like to apply for dual citizenship. Not sure why but its been a bug in my ear for yrs. I wish Id known about it when Mom was alive, apparentely she didnt know. 🤷

Heres a possible odd question, do you think its a good idea? Would I be looked on badly or as trying to honor my Grandma? Do you think there would be a downside? The only one I know of is if I go somewhere with a Irish passport and happen to get into trouble, then Im not going to Canada.

I cant explain why but its just something I want to do. 🙂 thus why Im also interested in the cultural.

I’ve held dual citizenship for years. I’ve never had trouble with it before. Of course, I have to carry two passports when I travel outside the United States.

As far as I can tell, the only problems there might be is in holding dual citizenship with a country that is hostile to the United States. I don’t think that’s ever been a case with Ireland.

You may want to look into it a little more:

So youre Irish and American then? Id be Irish and Canadian. I was told that if I went stateside to use my Canadian passport, and if I went to the UK then to use my Irish one. Does it work the same for you??

Do you live one place more than the other? Why is the sky blue, and the ocean green Thought since I was asking so many questions I could toss them in 😃 (lol)

btw I can cross to the US with the Irish but since Canada is closer it was advised to use that.

Do you have to pay any annual fees or anything??

And I should get Seumus’s book in a week or so, I prepaid for the order tonight. I also saw “How the Irish Saved Civilization” Thomas Cahill which looked good too, so I bought it, have you read it?

And I hate to ask :o have you read the Princes of Ireland, I have it but havent read yet, are they dumb, good ??? if you know 😃

Thanks for the links, I hope your not bored here and we’re not asking too many questions

I have a cross on my right arm and Im wanting to add a crown of throrns to it, do you think that would be sinful? I mean my God parents are 100 % agianst tattoos and say its a violation of the fifth commandment. I dont agree with that and certainly hope theyre not right but do you think that what I have is enough? Its the only one I have, I just think a crown of thorns around it would be a nice touch to it.

Even if you don’t think that it’s against the 5th commandment, it looks to me like you are planning on violating the 4th.
