Confusing and hair subject...what happened between Catholics and the Jewish people?

I have some Jewish friends and when it comes up that I’m Catholic…things get weird. I don’t know why though. My great grandfather was Jewish and I used to be a Torah Keeper so I have some idea about Judaism. I just don’t understand the whole Catholic vs Jewish thing.

What happened, was it the Crusades?

Catholocism is a continuation of the Jewish faith. The major difference is that we believe that the Messiah has come. Christ is the Messiah of prophecy, according to Catholic belief, while the Jewish religion is still waiting on the Messiah.

It isn’t the Crusades. The Crusades involved Christian people fighting wars to reclaim Holy Land and defend Christian people in the Middle East.

Since Christ was crucified, some Christians placed blame on the Jews for His death, and that may be why there is some friction. But, it’s obviously wrong to blame an entire religion for that, especially since it was His plan all along to sacrifice Himself for us. (Somebody please correct me if the following statements are incorrect!!) I believe that Vatican II stated that blame is not to be put onto the Jewish people, as a whole or the individual Jewish people that turned Jesus over to Pontius Pilate. But the Second Vatican Council wasn’t too long ago, in the grand scheme of things, so there may be some leftover hostility from the beliefs of some Christian before that.

If I may offer some advice in dealing with your Jewish friends- be polite, respectful, and loving. As Christians, we should show to everyone the love that has been shown to us. Teach others by example: live a Christian life, love God and love your neighbor, treat everybody as though they’re a piece of art created by God Himself. (Because they are!!!)

Anybody reading this- if I’ve made any errors, please correct me! As far as I know, what I’ve said is true, but I’ve been wrong before and I’d bet the farm that I’ll be wrong again!

You have touched on something important actually. The Church IS and Catholics are the new chosen people! Here is something I wrote on another thread (a couple of different posts):

There are a number of notable Jewish converts to Catholicism who would argue that the Talmud (which originally was oral tradition later written down) Kept “scripture” and the people who’s job was to understand and teach from it honest.

Sounds pretty familiar doesn’t it? Similarly the same claim the church has been making since well forever “remove tradition from scripture” and you have a free for all. This was dealt with in the first fights against the early heretical movements. Which many saints were quoted as using the fact that “heretics” used scripture how they wanted to suit their ideas and the Saints nail home sometimes pretty sternly that tradition IS how we root out these people and bring them into light to show the world their errors.

I will always be convinced that Christ changed much from the old covenant to the new but he knew his audience and didn’t change what would have been normal for the Jewish people in custom to something vastly different and unrecognizable. Hence the old Passover became the new (Eucharist) in both form and meal. Liturgical practice similar and many more parallels.

The same Jewish Converts also have a common thread once they experience the Mass and its pretty unanimous they feel like they are at the synagogue. Coincidence? I think not.

Gods true tradition WAS the Jewish people and what he told them to do. They were the original City on a hill! they were supposed to be so visible the world would emulate them and please God. They failed many, many, many times. The failed so much they (and when I say they I mean us too) crucified the lord! Even though they had established many safeguards to prevent such a thing from happening. The Talmud much like Sacred Tradition was a means to help understand scripture which and they will tell you this too is hard to understand and if left to mans own devices becomes what ever he wants it to be…see all of protestant history for proof.

Also I might add here that while the Jews had failed in their mission to unite all of humanity Jesus did show up and he DID found a new Covenant on the Old Covenant. That my friend was the new Passover which is the Eucharist and the New Covenant in his blood. He established a Visible Church as the new Judaism (or a continuation depending on who you ask) and the Church became the new House on a hill. A completely visible thing in which would unite the world. Same mission new face.

I hope you can pull out the relevant stuff there. As for VATII and the Church position on the Death of our Lord it is ALL of our faults and that includes the Jew’s.
