Confusion About St. John the Baptist

One of the first things Jesus did after the dessert was to go to St. John and was baptized. Before he did it, John states Jesus should be baptizing him, not John baptizing Jesus. Once John did baptize Him, the heavens opened up and spoke God “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” So it seems apparent John knew who Jesus was.

Yet, in yesterday’s Gospel, John sends his helpers while in prison to ask Jesus if He is the one or should we look for another?

This confuses me. Did not John know already Jesus was the one? Why was John questioning? Any ideas?

Where in Gospel did that come from?

Actually, When Mary visited Elizabeth, John leaped in the womb somehow knowing that Mary was carry Christ.
 
I have read, but don’t remember where, that John knew that Jesus was the Messiah, but wanted the disciples to learn it for themselves from Jesus, rather than depending on his testimony. .

**You’ve gotten it backwards. FIRST Baptism, THEN the fasting in the desert.

As far as the doubts of St. John the Baptist, don’t forget that he was in jail facing execution, probably in a bit of depression, wondering if his life had all been worthwhile. The important thing is not St. John’s question, but Jesus’s answer.**
