Confusion over bible verse notation

So, I’m looking at some Catholic “read the bible in a year” plans and I’m starting out very confused at the notation of the chapters/verses that I’m supposed to read. There is notation such as “1 John 1:1-3:10” and “Genesis 9:1-11:26” and I can’t understand what I’m supposed to do with that. The only format I’ve ever seen in my life for bible verse notation is that akin to “John 3:16” with the chapter before the colon and the verse after it. I am using the RSV2CE, and another thing I note is that there is no “1 John” or “2 John” but just “John”. Can someone please help clear up this system for me?
 
Forgive me, I’ve figured out its telling me to go from a specific verse to a specific verse. God bless all!
 
I stumbled around with this when I first started reading the Bible on my own. “John” is the Gospel, “1 John”, “2 John” and “3 John” are the letters St. John wrote which are towards the back of the New Testament.

A little side note just to be aware of: the Second and Third letters of St. John, “2 John” and “3 John”, are so short that they only have a single chapter. You will not see a chapter number after the name of these books, just a verse, like “3 John 7”.
