Confusion with so many different bibles

When people think of the New American Bible, many think of it as a new different translation instead of a more accurate, updated translation. They think the older the translation, the more accurate the Bible. Many prefer the King James Version over the New American Bible (St. Joseph Family edition) for this reason. Aside from the reason of our Bible having the more books, how do I erase the confusion that a “newer” Catholic bible does not mean “a different translation to push our Catholic agenda”?

If people prefer the King James Version, you could suggest the Douay-Rheims Version. It is a Catholic Bible that has same type of language as the King James. Many of the verses are actually identical. All the “thees, thous, and thines” are there. Anybody who likes the language of the KJV would like the language of the D-R.

Thanks for the info. Would you also happen to know why passages like Ez36:25-27 is worded so differently in the KJV as compared to the New American Bible? If I was a skeptical Protestant, I would brush the NAB aside as trying to sound more pleasing to Catholic ears. The KJV says:at the end of Ez36:26: “and I will give you an heart of flesh” while the NAB says: “and giving you natural hearts”

Ez36:27 ends in the KJV with: “and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them” while the NAB states: “and make you live by my statutes, careful to observe my decrees” How did they end up being worded so differently? If I was a Protestant, I wouldn’t trust any translation that is “new”. Many people think that a “new” bible is nothing more than a bunch of people getting together and changing some bible verses to satisfy their own personal or religious interpretations.

How do I explain that “new” Catholic bibles do not do that?

The NAB is one of the worst translations available. Just do a search in the Sacred Scripture forum.

By the way here’s the D-R translation:
Eze 36:25 And I will pour upon you clean water, and you shall be cleansed from all your filthiness, and I will cleanse you from all your idols.
Eze 36:26 And I will give you a new heart, and put a new spirit within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and will give you a heart of flesh.
Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit in the midst of you: and I will cause you to walk in my commandments, and to keep my judgments, and do them.
Here are the same verses from the KJV.
Eze 36:25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
Eze 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

If the King James Authorized Version was good enough for the Apostle Paul, it’s good enough for me! So there!

(BTW - for our Protestant friends: the real 1611 Authorized KJV included what you call the Apocrypha. Those books weren’t removed until the late 1800’s. 6 is the devil’s number because it’s incomplete, and your 66-book bible is also incomplete.)
