Not even close to being the same thing. Pregnancy is NOT a sin. The sin is having premarital sex. A pregnancy should ALWAYS be congratulated despite the circumstances.
Actually very close to being the same thing. Obviously her marriage is NOT a sin, in her opinion, and many Catholic/Christians are beginning to believe the same thing.

I’m not trolling, just failing to see any kind of compassion and Love toward the OP’s Niece, whom she truly loves.

The ultimate act of compassion and love is to care about the fate of one’s soul. Giving somebody a high five and congratulating them on an action that could separate their soul from God for eternity is hardly showing them love.

If the person chooses to believe what they’re doing is not a sin, that’s their call. But we are doing them no favors by condoning it. That doesn’t mean be rude or cut them off. The OP can simply reply that she cares about her niece, loves her, and wishes her well. That’s not judgmental or mean.

The neice’s opinion isn’t relevant. She knows it’s a sin since she was brought up Catholic - the OP is her godparent. She may currently dissent from that but she knows the teaching.

If you don’t like the murderer analogy, how about a relative that announces he has just taken a second wife or is “marrying” a sibling? Would you insist that the relative congratulate them and force them to “feel” happy about it? Being compassionate and loving is not the same as stuffing all semblance of decency and faking happiness at a very unhappy situation.

Um, it’s her (the Niece’s) life and she obviously doesn’t think her marriage is an abomination and horrible sin, in fact it is her BLISS. If any of my true friends or beloved family members got married to anyone man/woman and were happy, I would congratulate each and every one of them.
This is like saying that if it is someone’s bliss to move in with their boyfriend/girlfriend and never marry, and that made them happy, they ought to be congratulated for finding their BLISS. If they have a threesome arrangement because one of them is bisexual, and that makes them happy, congratulate them, because they found their BLISS. If they choose to get drunk or get high every day because they have figured out how to make money in investments, and that makes them happy, congratulate them. If they become the #1 porn actress in the country, congratulate them for their career success. IOW, if they are public in their embrace of any “personal” sin, then congratulate them, because “it doesn’t hurt anyone.”

When someone reaches the pinnacle success in an objectively sinful enterprise, there are no congratulations in order. The more you love them, the more that is true.
Yes it is an absolutely illogical and horrible analogy and to even insinuate murder and SSM are related in any way.

Why don’t you do what an above poster said and actually MEET your niece’s partner first. It’s not up to you whom she marries. Let he is without sin cast the first stone.
You misquote that passage. It is a spiritual work of mercy to admonish the sinner.

That is fine that it is the niece’s life. She is responsible before God for working out her own salvation “with fear and trembling”, as St. Paul puts it (or choice not to obtain it). However, the aunt or uncle does not have to approve of it, let alone condone it.

If any Catholic believes homosexual activity is acceptable behavior, then they cannot be called Catholic. If they persist in such a mentality, then they are outside the Church.

It is also a charitable act. Real charity is telling the hard truth, even if it hurts feelings.

To a Catholic, equate murder and SSM is a perfect analogy. They both equate to risking going to hell

The OP is trying to love her niece and be respectful but at the same time she must uphold the Catholic faith. You would like her to withhold the Truth but that is not real love. Many Catholics and Protestants may come to believe that same sex marriage is good but that is not the way God views it. The truth hurts but it will always be the better path. Catholics cannot support gay marriage and the Church will never ever change that fact. Praise God!

Just to clarify: the important part is that the truth be told unequivocally. That does not remove the need to express the truth in a way that is as kind and compassionate as possible.

Pope St. John Paul II once put it this way:
The modern world boasts of the enticing door which says: everything is permitted. It ignores the narrow gate of discernment and renunciation. I am speaking especially to you, young Christians, particularly to the many altar servers who have come to Rome these days on pilgrimage: Pay attention! Your life is not an endless series of open doors! Listen to your heart! Do not stay on the surface, but go to the heart of things! And when the time is right, have the courage to decide! The Lord is waiting for you to put your freedom in his good hands.
St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross was able to understand that the love of Christ and human freedom are intertwined, because love and truth have an intrinsic relationship. The quest for truth and its expression in love did not seem at odds to her; on the contrary she realized that they call for one another. In our time, truth is often mistaken for the opinion of the majority. In addition, there is a widespread belief that one should use the truth even against love or vice versa. But truth and love need each other. St Teresa Benedicta is a witness to this. The “martyr for love”, who gave her life for her friends, let no one surpass her in love. At the same time, with her whole being she sought the truth, of which she wrote: “No spiritual work comes into the world without great suffering. It always challenges the whole person”. St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross says to us all: Do not accept anything as the truth if it lacks love. And do not accept anything as love which lacks truth! One without the other becomes a destructive lie.

From his homily at the canonization of St. Teresa Beedicta of the Cross, Oct. 1998

So my niece recently married her partner in another state where same sex marriage is legal. I love my niece, who by the way is also my godchild. But I am not sure if I want to congratulate her since I am really not a supporter of same sex marriage. I have never met her partner. They have been together several years. She seems happy being in this relationship. I want to support her in her happiness, but in this situation, I don’t know what to say. How can I acknowledge this event in her life, show my support of her happiness without seeming supportive of the whole same sex thing?
The union is not about you, it’s about the couple. It’s not about your approval, it’s about love. You can certainly congratulate her on finding love and making a commitment. You don’t have to endorse or approve of their sexual behavior to wish them happiness. To withhold sincere good wishes is unkind and unChristian, in my opinion.

Question:

Would anyone’s opinion change if it was the OP’s Daughter?
What if it was your daughter?

This is how my views changed on SSM, when it hits home you see those closest to you
find love, who am I to judge and call that love “not real/an abomination/going to hell risk.” That’s not logical.

The niece is making a commitment to stay in an objectively immoral relationship that pretends marriage where there is no marriage because there can be no marriage, nor any moral sexual consort because the relationship is between two persons of the same gender. No, it is neither unkind nor un-Christian to fail to congratulate someone who has “found” that, regardless of whether or not secular society applauds or protects it. You may as well say it is unkind to fail to congratulate a priest who simply abandons the priesthood and marries in violation of his vows or un-Christian to frown on anyone who has publicly embraced a state of life that is objectively immoral because it gives them pleasure or relieves a previous stress. The world teaches that; the Church does not.

Do you think none of us have any homosexual friends or relatives? Do you think the Pope is endorsing same-sex marriage? He fought it tooth and nail in Argentina, so I somehow doubt it. He is a compassionate man, he would not be shaming, but he would correct the error.

Remember the whole quote:
“If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”
He was not talking about gay marriage. He has never swerved from Church teaching about whether marriage is possible between two persons of the same sex. He was talking about whether or not he would judge a fellow priest who had homosexual tendencies.

“No, it is neither unkind nor un-Christian to fail to congratulate someone who has “found” that, regardless of whether or not secular society applauds or protects it.”

I think you mean " … to REFUSE to congratulate … "

It’s unkind. It’s unChristian. What did Jesus Christ say about love? Plenty. What did he say about who should love whom? We should all love one another. Where is the place in your bible that says a woman cannot and should not love another woman? I’ll wait with sandwiches by my laptop for you to tell me specifically where that appears in the bible.

Nope. To wish them well is not the same thing as endorsing or condoning their sexual identities or behavior. What would you lose by being kind? Are you afraid of tarnishing your own shiny badge of righteousness?

If I had meant to write “refuse,” I’d have written it. To refrain is sufficient; there is no need to make a dramatic production out of it. I did not say it was out of place to wish someone well. I said it was out of place to congratulate someone for making a commitment to live a life based on a sexual relationship that is intrinsically wrong.

“Shiny badge of righteousness”? Really? In a diatribe about kindness, you chose to go there? OK, hang onto your laptop…this is my last post, because this thread has gotten enough.

My brothers, if anyone among you should stray from the truth and someone bring him back, he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. James 5:19-20

They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions. Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is improper. Rom. 1:22-28

Do you not know that the unjust will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor boy prostitutes nor practicing homosexuals nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God…Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.
1 Cor. 6: 9-10, 18-20

This is what Our Lord had to say about sexual sins and going to Hell:
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna. Matt. 5:25-28

This is what he said about the imperative to “make nice” with the family as a sign of love:
*Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have come to set a man ‘against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s enemies will be those of his household.’
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. * Matt. 10:34-39

Note below that the admonition not to associate with disobedient actions is in the very paragraph in which the Apostle Paul describes how a Christian must live in love:
So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. Immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is fitting among holy ones, no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place, but instead, thanksgiving. Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure or greedy person, that is, an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient. So do not be associated with them. Eph. 5:1-7

Thanks, Easter Joy for putting all those verses together. 🙂 I will save the thread.

I would only add to the OP… if we knew a loved one had found Bliss and true love with the opposite sex and chose to move in with them, we would not congratulate them. It goes against our beliefs. And just because many, many others have accepted this as OK does not change the Truth. It is wrong.

Would you congratulate a person on committing an action that you believe is morally wrong? Imagine that society suddenly decides to make certain behavior acceptable, but that you find morally wrong. I suspect that you will say that certain things are definitely unacceptable, even if society has decided otherwise. Everyone has their boundary of right and wrong, even a secularist without an objective moral code. So you see, it is not fair to insist that people must celebrate what they believe is morally wrong.

As for compassion, I’m sure the OP has plenty of it for her niece. But supporting the niece in her sin is not compassionate.

Likewise for committing genocide and masturbation, but neither analogy is good. It’s better to compare SSM with marriage of divorced persons.
