Colorado congressman calls Miami a ‘Third World country’
A critic of citizenship opportunities for illegal immigrants says ‘Third World’ Miami shows America’s future if immigration isn’t checked.

WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo, the leader of the anti-illegal immigration faction in the U.S. House, spent a recent weekend at The Breakers in Palm Beach.

Ninety miles to the south, he found a symbol to bolster his belief that unfettered immigration is endangering the United States: Miami, he told a conservative online news site, ``has become a Third World country.’’

In South Florida to attend Restoration Weekend, a gathering of conservative activists, the Colorado Republican, whose district includes suburbs of Denver, pointed to Miami as an example of how ‘‘the nature of America can be changed by uncontrolled immigration,’’ the story says.

‘‘Look at what has happened to Miami,’’ the WorldNetDaily quotes Tancredo as saying in an interview. ``It has become a Third World country. You just pick it up and take it and move it someplace. You would never know you’re in the United States of America. You would certainly say you’re in a Third World country.’’

Apparently, it seems that Tom Tancredo’s true colors are shining through. I can’t see what he means other than some roundabout supremacist rhetoric.

Also, yesterday, on the Ed Schulz show, I heard a caller defend Tancredo’s statements in the most disgustingly racist terms. The man was basically a white supremacist and proud of it. I almost threw up after hearing the call. 😦
 
Have you been to Miami? The street signs are in Spanish, all the store signs are in Spanish. Crime is rampant, litter and graffiti is everywhere. Looks like he called a spade a spade.
 
Really smart of Tancredo. Really smart. Miami is a hotbed of pro-GOP Cuban-Americans - who vote. I guess we can scratch Big-Mouth Tom off the list of Republican possibilities in '08.
 
Visit some cities on the West Coast and, yes, there will be Spanish, but also a lot of Asian languages. California’s original state constitution was written in Spanish.
America is still a melting pot.
My grandmother might have said, “Welcome to America. ow speak Cherokee.” 🙂

Have you been to the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, NY? The signs are all in Polish! And just about everyone speaks it. And go down to Brighton Beach - the same, but everything there is in Russian.

I don’t think you can refer to a whole city as a “third world country”. I like Miami because of its latin influences, heritage, and location. Even if we were to cut off all “illegal immigration”, Miami still would be a lot different than most of the country.

I have not been to NYC in years, but I don’t doubt that you have as much or more graffiti as Miami, so do parts of Chicago. To be honest many parts of the US are not that far from being 3rd world. There is a line in a John Prine song that goes “It ain’t such a long drop from the diamonds in the sidewalk to the dirt in the gutter.”

All which goes to show how racially motivated Tancredo’s anti-hispanic remarks were.
 
The congressman doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Miami is a world class international city. It was a quiet, sleepy Southern town before the immigrants arrived. But it is now, one of the largest cities in America.

So, because signs are in Spanish that makes it a third world country. And there are no crimes in other large US cities? :confused:
 
I could see why he would say that about Miami. Well at least parts of Miami. But the same could be said of parts of many cities in our country.

The problem is that America is no longer a melting pot. It is more a Stew. Each part remains individual with a little bit of cross over. Yes we are all in the same bowl but we can tell what is a carrot what is beef and what is a potato. (No this is not a reference to the Irish)

When a person comes to this country they no longer need to speak English to get ahead. They can go to the parts of the country that speak there language.

We need to get to a point were we stop saying I am African-American, Mexican-American, Irish-American, Italian-American, and simply be American. You do go over to France and meet German-French and so fourth they are French.

We are the most divided country in the world.

Incidentally in High School I had a friend who was born in South Africa and lived there till he was 12 than he and his family moved to America and became citizens. When he was preparing to enroll in college and got to the race question he marked all of them African American. Of course when he got to the University they were very upset to have enrolled a Blond Hair Blue Eyed African American. But of Course if any one had the right to call themselves that it was him.

Have you been to the South Side of Chicago? Inner Detroit? Gary, Indiana? New Orleans? The street signs are in English, all the store signs are in English. Crime is rampant, litter and graffiti are everywhere.

Clearly there are other factors at work here than just illegal immigration.
