Spirited march – More than 3,000 walk Danbury streets to celebrate rite

DANBURY – Bishop William E. Lori called it "holy water,’’ and it fell nearly continuously for part of Sunday afternoon.
But it didn’t discourage local Catholics from celebrating the Year of the Eucharist. Like the rain on the crops, it may have encouraged a greater yield.
More than 3,000 of the faithful, three times more than organizers expected, marched under a canopy of umbrellas from St. Peter Church on Main Street to the Green to honor the body of Christ.
"If you come out on a day like today to walk in a procession and to adore our Lord, I know how much you value this great gift,’’ Lori said.
Members of seven Danbury churches, St. Peter, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Anthony Maronite, St Joseph and St. Nicholas Byzantine, joined the procession, inspired by the late Pope John Paul II’s declaration that Catholics should commemorate the sacrament given during Mass to symbolize the bread and wine Christ gave his disciples during the Last Supper.
"It’s an exciting event for us,’’ said Robert Arconti, a St. Peter parishioner who was helping marchers line up for the procession. "Since we believe that the Eucharist is the body of Christ, this is our celebration.’’
