It’s astonishing how animal-like and simple human beings seem when you are thinking inside the simianocentric box - unable to grasp the significance of abstract principles, syntactic language, logical reasoning, free will and moral responsibility…
So you think it’s fruitful to consider ourselves fundamentally separate from other animals, to abstract our various abilities from their probable physical causes?
Your logic is defective:
- Our bodies have physical forces
2.** We** are capable of purposeful activity
- Therefore physical forces have produced purposeful activity!
Our bodies are physical entities. There is no part of them that has been demonstrated to be independent of physical existence.
What is the evidence for your assumption that matter is the **sole **reality?
Uh, matter isn’t the sole reality. Energy, forces and fields exist too, as does space, understood as that which lies between observable physical entities.
In many ways when your interests conflict with theirs…
So treating people badly is preferable to negotiating compromise? Fair cop, though, if others treat me badly straight off the bat.
False. Evolution is a** physical **process which has no insight or intent whatsoever.
Right. So why are you bemused by the differential survival rates of intelligent animals?
Then how and why did sex originate?
According to current research, from single-celled organisms that developed ways to exchange genetic material with other single celled organisms.
How and why did intelligence originate?
Originally, probably through a series of mutations. However, once the mechanisms were present, natural selection would have taken over to select for those organisms that had the best survival and reproductive outcomes in any given population.
In many more circumstances intelligence and adaptability have become extinct whereas simple organisms have survived to this very day. You have just referred deprecatingly to the extinction rates of intelligent animals!
Intelligence is observed primarily in modern animals. We don’t have much to go on, except for the size of the braincase, in order to estimate the intelligence of extinct species. What is apparent, however, is that adaptable opportunists seem to do well. Neanderthal man probably had a larger brain than modern humans, yet they died out. This may have been because they were better adapted in bodily terms to survive ice-age conditions, and when the ice retreated, they didn’t adapt fast enough. Or it may be because modern humans out-competed them for resources. Intelligence by itself is not enough to ensure long-term survival. Environmental change doesn’t always favour the smart and well-adapted; environments don’t always change, but may move to new locations, and such organisms as are adapted to thrive in certain environments - such as rats and cockroaches in modern cities - will move to places where they can do well.
Certainly - if one has an irrational suspicion… You were the one who stated the history of most religions is evidence that wishful thinking is a good recipe for disillusionment and disaster whereas it turns out that atheists have a substantially higher rate of suicide! Or perhaps you think that is a positive response to the problems of life!
I would be inclined to question your sources, to begin with. Why is it irrational to disbelieve in supernatural entities? I mean, atheism in the modern world may correlate with higher suicide rates, but how do these compare to the homicide rates of religious believers?
Are you denying the power and success of the scientific method?
Not at all - I am denying the omnipotence and omniscience of the scientific method.
When you claim the mind must be material you are implicitly claiming that you know all there is to be known about the nature of reality…
Hardly. I am claiming the mind is
probably a physical phenomenon, on the basis of the fact that so many things previously attributed to supernatural forces have been found to have perfectly adequate physical explanations. Not so much that it
can’t be supernatural, but that I find no reason to
assume it is so.
Do you say to him “I love you, my dear old
thing”?! Is he just a material object as far as you are concerned? Husbands **are **often regarded as pieces of furniture.

What does he consist of? Solely of what you can see, taste, smell, hear and touch? I wonder what your love for him consists of…
How else would I relate to him other than through my own senses? I have never had telepathic conversation with him, only that which is facilitated by the physical functions of speech and sound and hearing. That is my means of insight into his mind. My love for him is based upon observation of his actions and my conversations with him, as well as the more primal functions of touch, taste and smell, all of which reveal that he is a compassionate, empathetic, intelligent man and one whom I happen to find aesthetically attractive. How else do you expect to be able to interact with another but through your senses? Do you have a sixth sense? Are you telepathic?
