Conscience Exemption

I am having a discussion with one of my friends who supports Obama, and when I mentioned the lack of a conscience exemption in the new health care bill, his response was:

But I also firmly believe that the president didn’t have an option to take that out of the bill and still have the democrats base approve the bill. Ya know? So he voted to keep the other things, even with the bad part coming with.

Does anyone know whether he is correct about this or not?

Uh this entirely has to do with Sebelius does it not? She and Obama have approved a conscience clause for a year, but said no more after that. I do not believe this had anything to do with the bill itself.

It’s a judgment call. If he would’ve, would he have gotten support for it from his party? We’ll never know, will we?

Sorry, I was unclear. I was asking whether or not Obama himself supported the conscience exemption. If you can find a reliable source that gives a direct quote from him one way or the other, that would be helpful.

Based on his support for abortion, and for other planks of the Democrat party that are contrary to Catholic teaching , I think it’s a safe guess that he couldn’t care less about the consciences of those put in such positions in the health care bill.

But even so, the “If I left such and such in a bill, or didn’t include such and such in a bill and it would or wouldn’t pass” argument by politicians is a moral sell out.

Thekilling of babies by helping fund abortion is not “balanced” out morally by the good in the bill, for example.

Politics may be the art of compromise, but moral issues are not subject to compromise.
