I hope this is the right category.

Basically i’ve beign christian for a long time but never really took the faith with the seriousness it demands until recently. Now i am tring to be a better christian and get rid of old habits. The thing is, today i engaged in sin even though i knew it was a sin. Before i would give myself excuses but today i thought about it as a sin and thought to myself “that is wrong” but did it anyway. Of course, know i regret it but the fact that i did it in the first place scares me. I am planning to go to my first confession soon and have already established new rules for myself in an attempt to avoid this same situation from happening in the future.
Has anyone here gone through something like this? What should i do?

Ps: It is not a crime or anything but it is still a sin a i knew it was.

Most of us have committed more than one intentional sin in our lives.

This is why Confession is so important!!

Antonio are you Catholic? Are you about to undergo the Sacrament of Reconcilliation for the first time?

We all sin, we are all sinners.

I am. I was baptized as a child but it was more due to cultural reasons than religious ones (neither of my parents are catholic). I became a christian early on, had my crisis of faith but always menaged to return. However, i was more of a “mere christian” than any denomination and am just now returning to the catholic church (did the first communion years ago).

Get to the Mass this Sunday and start partaking the sacraments and rites of your Church. Just dont take Communion until you have been to Confession.
Welcome back Home

You may want to contact your priest. You might benefit by attending the RCIA classes starting up this month. It will help you understand more about the Catholic Faith.

I have beign going to church every sunday. The priest told me that i should confess before taking the holy communion so i intend to do this as soon as possible.
Thank you for your advice.

Can you do so before your next Mass? I go regularily to Confession, every few weeks. I am such a sinner.

Will try, but i’m afraid that i may be unable to. But i will definitely try. Thank you.

That’s what sin is. It is when you deliberately contradict the laws of God.

To be a sin, one must have three things:

1 - Temptation to commit the sin.
2 - Full knowledge what one is doing.
3 - Consent to act against the will of God; or, what is basically the same thing, an actual follow through in the execution of it.

If one didn’t know one was sinning, then how could one wholeheartedly call it a sin? A child commits sins, but we don’t say they are sinful because they are not spiritually mature enough to discern the difference.

When you come to realize what you are doing is wrong, you’re still kind of on a learning edge, though. And, you’ll kind of remain there for the rest of your life, although you will find new ways to cope.

It’s something we all go through, if we have any conscience at all.

BTW, there is some talk in the Old Testament, whereby people say “if one offends his brother unintentionally, then he should ask for forgiveness…” That’s an incomplete understanding and definition of sin, as it leaves out the full thrust of how vicious sin actually is.

But, if one is going to rise above the righteousness of the Pharisees, then one needs to consider things all in all.

This is basically necessary for a sin to be a sin. It’s not a sin if you don’t know it’s wrong. In other words, consciously sinning is what sinning is.

Hadn’t thought about that. Thanky you for awnsering.
No problem Welcome to the club.

You’ll find your new accordion teacher two doors down on the left. He’s the one dressed in the red spandex leotard, has a widow’s peak, narrow goatee, and 70’s sideburns… He smells funny, and is a bit eccentric… always carries a pitchfork, and likes to keep the room at a constant temperature of 2000 degrees celsius… I’ve never been 100% sure why an accordion teacher needs a pitchfork… every time I ask he just laughs and says “for the hell of it…”

Alternatively, if you’d like to drop the matter altogether, we offer high quality harp lessons three floors up on the right.

Don’t want to sound like the other brother in the Prodigal Son story here, but this is an aspect of our theology that I have to admit I have never found to be particularly fair.

Those who commit sins, knowing they are doing wrong, are sinning, but those vast amounts of people who don’t care about/acknowledge Christianity or God can do all these terrible things throughout their lives, but they are not committing sins, because they don’t believe them to be sins? So despite all their wrongdoings, they have nothing got confess, because they aren’t actually committing sins?

the Catechism of the Catholic Church says a lot about sin. Paragraph 1735 talks about how habitual sin can be. Yes, we consciously walk right into it, because it has a grasp on us.

It’s hard to change. Look how many years people go to school to change themselves. It can take a long time. But, we should pray FOR the change, pray FOR the grace to change, and not give up.

There are so many distractions, for one thing, and so many messages around us that deny God and deny sin. But, we are CALLED to holiness, to be like God. If this sin is something you do three times a day or three times a week, you should begin by cutting back to two times a day or week. Look at yourself at how you can change and turn away from sin. When we turn FROM sin, we are turning to Christ. And so we should encourage ourself with with things that bring us closer to Christ, such as scripture and study. We each need to focus on Christ and what is good.

Example. I watch less and less TV because so much on TV is degrading, dehumanizing, disgusting (things I would not want to encounter in my own life). When it comes on, I just turn the channel or turn it off. I might have programs on the dvr that are entertaining or have some value.

One of the things I do is THIS right here – spend time making up a response to a question to possibly help someone. There are many ways to help others, this is one of them.

For sure, develop the habit (the virtue) of praying – are there not many things we all need to pray for? That all by itself is a new purpose for your life. In the Lord’s prayer and in the Hail Mary we use the word “us” – think about how many people you are praying for when you say “us.” We’re praying for the Don’t forget to give thanks for all you have.
