My question was!

If I had sex before my conversion and have abstained from and live life of chastity and been celibate for two years can I become a consecrated virgin?

Sorry for the confusion

No confusion on my part…you had sex and that means you are not eligible to be a consecrated virgin. It does not matter if you have now abstained and been celibate for two years, before or after conversion, you need to be a “*** physical virgin ***”

MM3 … Don’t fret. ANY person can make a promise of chastity/ celibacy and privately dedicate that to God. But, if you are looking for a more public way of pronouncing your consecration to God, have you looked into Secular Institutes ? Maybe that will be of some help to you.

Let me check on that. From what I’ve read, yes you can, as long as you didn’t live a life of scandel, that is, lived with a man without benefit of marriage or what have you.

**Karin, **from what you know, is the rule you are citing so strict it would exclude a woman who was a victim of sexual assault?

My understanding is that you NEED to be a PHYSICAL VIRGIN …if that excludes sexual assult victims I do not know…perhaps the person should ask the local Bishop:) if that was the reason for loosing her virginity.

Karin:
Thanks for the link! I found it very interesting since we have a Consecrated Virgin that has come to our parish when her spiritual director became the Pastoral Administrator.

According to the link you provided, Consecrated Virgins are NOT supposed to use the title “Sister” nor the initials OCV or CV after her name … hmmm … I wonder why someone who has agreed to be Consecrated as a Virgin would not follow the “rules”?
Can one use “OCV” or “CV” after her name after she receives the Consecration of a Virgin?
No, she should not use these initials because she is not a member of a Religious Institute. The Order of Virgins is not a Religious Institute in the Church. In this use of the term “order,” it signifies a category of consecrated life, as the various categories are listed and explained in Vita Consecrata.
Can one be called “Sister” after having received the Consecration of a Virgin for a Woman Living in the World, according to Canon 604?
No, for the same reason as given in the previous question.

Correct becuase they are **not a member of a Religious Institute. **
*The consecrated virgin living in the world embodies a definitive vocation in itself. **She is not a quasi-Religious, nor is she in a vocation that is in the process of becoming a Religious institute or congregation. She is a consecrated woman, nevertheless, with her bishop as her guide. By virtue of the Consecration, she is responsible to pray for her diocese and clergy. At no time is her diocese responsible for her financial support. ***

From what I’ve read a womanwho is the victim of sexual abuse can become a consecrated virgin, because she didn’t give her virginity away, it was forcefully taken.

Thank you for your posts and links

Do priests have to be virgins to enter priesthood?

The Consecration of Virgins Religious Profession

The virgin is consecrated (dedicated) by God; passive; is open to and surrenders to God’s action The virgin consecrates (dedicates) herself to God; active; a binding of oneself to certain actions, a legal contract
The bishop receives the virgin in the name of Christ for the Church Vows are received by the superior or bishop in the name of the Church
Presupposes the promise (resolve) of perpetual virginity The vow of chastity is made
The virgin lives in the world in a lifestyle that does not endanger or hinder her fulfillment of her role and position in the Church By vows of obedience and poverty the religious binds herself to live in community
As the Church is bride of Christ (Eph. 5:23-33), the consecrated virgin is the visible sign of this brideship and becomes in a special way an open channel of blessings for the whole Church The religious becomes a special servant of the Church according to the purpose of her Order or Congregation
She is morally obliged to live in accord with the graces received at Consecration. She is to live in the state of one espoused to Christ, i.e., to make action in union with Christ the substance of her daily living She is morally obliged to fulfill the promises of her vows according to their interpretation by her Order or Congregation

So, if one loses her skin do to other means besides relations, are you saying she can not become a consecrated virgin?

That is what I take it to mean…but if MM3 is worried about it perhaps she should speak with her Bishop to have it verified!
