Consecrated? What to do with host

My son found a host in a side room of our worship space after mass. Naturally, we were unsure if the host was consecrated. We approached the deacon who informed us that the host should be buried and offerred us the opportunity to take the host home and reverantly bury the host in the ground.

This didn’t sit well with me so I tried searching Mass Confusion and the GIRM, but could not find a definitive answer. The prevaling thought seems to be that the host should be fully dissolved in water and then poured on the ground. And this should be done only by a priest!

Can anyone help me with this one? Again we are unsure if the host is consecrated, and we want to do as the Church instructs.

Just place the Host in a sealed container of water and let it sit for a few days to dissolve, then pour the water into the ground in an area where it won’t be walked on.

Why not just make sure there is no dirt or “lint” on it and just consume it.

I would personally tell the Priest, not a Deacon beacuse the advice that he gave you is pretty bad.

He probably thought he was recommending the right thing…but imagine that you found a small amount of the Precious Blood remaining in a chalice (I know, it’s not likely ). We would instinctively know not to just go outside and dump it in the ground.

You could but you do not know if it has been in someone’s mouth. Most people don’t eat things they are uncertain of where they have been.

Second, with all due respect Br. Rich, I would consume the Host without a second thought, and check the ground for crumbs. I don’t for one second believe Jesus is going to allow me to become seriously ill from doing my utmost to show His Body and Blood the proper respect. If I get a cold, well, we all have our sufferings…

The Sacrarium just drains onto an area outside the church where it will not be walked on. There is no consecration for the ground.
