A friend of mine has been feeling like she is being called in one direction or another. She has been thinking about religious life but not sure which order to turn to because of her age. I believe she is 60 now. Her husband has been gone for 2 years now and a few years back when he was sick she saw someone on TV talking about being a consecrated widow. I was doing some background research for her and I found that as of 2007 Rome does not formally consecrated widows so I was wondering have they made any progress towards doing this. Or does any one know of orders that would let her enter, due to her second vocation and age because of it?

Thanks and God Bless!

She can go to Ronda Chervin’s website and see what she is proposing for the Latin Rite Church, to offer Consecrated Widowhood.

However, if she has a desire to be a consecrated religious Sister and live in community and wear a habit, we are starting a new community in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We have no age limit. We will evangelize and catechise by using the Sacred Fine Arts; music, writing, acting, art, architecture, culinary arts. Please call or write: SRPOLJC@catholic.org, or 773-984-8725 or write to: The Sisters of The Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ, P.O. Box 587, Summit, IL 60501
Sincerely in Christ,

Your friend may want to consider the Order of the Visitation started by St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal. The Visitation was actually begun after St. Jane de Chantal was widowed and it was made specifically with widows in mind. The most attractive aspect to older women is the rule, which does not require hard fasts or difficult penance. 🙂

Visitation Order of Snellville, GA
Visitation Order of Toledo, OH
Visitation Order of Tyringham, MA
Visitation Order of Philadelphia, PA
Visitation of Rockville, VA

There are some orders in different charisms that would be willing to consider older vocations:

Sisters of St. Francis of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Hankinson, ND

Sisters Oblates to the Blessed Trinity in Bronx, NY

Sisters Adorers of the Precious Blood in Manchester, NH

I hope this helps. God bless! 🙂

The Visitation Nuns also have a lovely monastery in Mobile, AL. Just Google up their
website: Visitation Monastery in Mobile. I will be going to visit then in two weeks. But
I was already there a few years ago to make a week-long silent retreat within the
enclosure. The Mobile Visitation accepts woman up to 60 years of age.

I can’t believe I forgot them! 😊 I’ve been wanting to make their Desert Experience retreat for a while now, even though I am not discerning to be a Visitation nun anymore (I am discerning to be a Carmelite nun, and I believe I know where I’m called. 🙂 ). Here is Mobile, Alabama’s website. It’s got a lot of information on it. 😃

The email address for the Sisters of the Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ
does not seem to work for me. I tried both in caps & in lower case…

The Sisters of The Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ should be able to be reached by: SRPOLJC@catholic.org or I can be reached at: srkathy@catholic.org or you can call me at 773-984-8725 or write to us at: P.O. Box 587 Summit, IL 60501

Thank you all for the information; I too am an older widow who is prayerfully considering a vocation as a nun. My age has always been a concern–especially since I need to wait about 5 or 6 more years until my youngest is out of college and on her own–and it’s good to see that I do have some options.
