I’m trying to answer a young man’s accusation about consecration prayers to Mary and am having difficulty how to answer and can’t seem to locate what I’m looking for on here. I know it must have been discussed several times so if you have a link you can offer or even if you know of a youtube video one could view on this topic - I’d appreciate it.
Here is the statement:
"Also, Consecration fo Mary, which starts off,
(O Mary, Virgin most powerful and Mother of Mercy, Queen of Heaven and Refuge of sinners, we consecrate ourselves to thine Immaculate Heart. We consecrate to thee our very being and our whole life; all that we have, all that we love, all that we are. To thee we give our bodies, our hearts and our souls; to thee we give our homes, our families, our country)
This is one of many prayers to Mary. Notice the salutation to Mary and giving our very souls to Mary. I’m sure you can understand how blasphemous this sounds to give our souls to anyone but Jesus Christ!"

Thank you both for your help. I’m not having trouble explaining praying to Mary and the saints for intercession…the difficulty is trying to explain the language in the Consecration prayer to Mary…like giving one’s very soul to Mary which sounds so offensive to the young man.
How to explain the church’s teaching of Mary, as a created being like the rest of us, but preserved from original sin, because her womb would bear the Lord and how Catholics honor her, but do not worship her - which is easy enough to say - but then the person presents the words in particular consecrations which to their mind sounds like one is worshipping her - or looking at her as a goddess.

How to explain this type of language?

Yes Cat, I was thinking that very thing when considering what to say…

With prayer and further study hopefully I’ll find something…

Thanks again 🙂

Hopper, if you haven’t already read this, the article at the link below is an extensive theological explanation of consecrating oneself to Mary:
